Whether it was caused by a "glitch", a middle-management homophobe without approval or Martians trying to stir things up in a non-election year, why doesn't Amazon understand that this entire PR disaster could have been averted with a simple:

"Wow, that's embarrassing, you guys! We're sorry. We'll fix that ASAP and figure out what happened."

I cancelled my account, not because I know the facts of what happened, but because of their lackluster response. I seriously doubt that Amazon's general corporate culture is in any way anti-gay, but why were they afraid to say, "It's really, really bad that our LGBT customers were met with such titles as A Parent’s Guide to Preventing Homosexuality as the first search result for 'homosexuality'"?

I wholeheartedly support their right to do business however they see fit. Likewise, I support our rights to shop from whomever we want. And I won't be shopping at Amazon again for a while, if ever.

Pathetic response by Amazon/ Amazon Corp PR. Having served many years in such a position at a major company with multi-constituencies, I know the pressure is intense and the gag in your PR mouth firmly placed by more senior executives. Who knows what Amazon's game plan really is; they've been dodgy and opaque, and they don't seem to feel the need to offer their public(s) a more substantive explanation. The hell with them, if they don't clarify.
