Anti-Gay Pastor: Parents Must ‘Squash Like A Cockroach’ The Gay Out Of Kids

Post image for Anti-Gay Pastor: Parents Must ‘Squash Like A Cockroach’ The Gay Out Of Kids

Editor’s note: Read our update — “Pastor Who Told Parents To Beat The Gay Out Of 4 Year Olds: I Was Joking

A virulently homophobic and anti-gay preacher on Sunday derided parents who don’t “squash like a cockroach” the gay out of their children. Pastor Sean Harris told parents they are “authorized,” and that he was “giving them a special dispensation” to attack their children. “Give them a good punch,” and “crack that wrist,” Harris told parents, if their four-year old boy, for example, “starts acting a little ‘girlish’.” Pastor Harris added that parents should tell their four-year olds to “man up, son, get that dress off you get outside and dig a ditch because that’s what boys do.”

Pastor Harris, of the Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, North Carolina, was speaking in favor of North Carolina’s Amendment One, which would write anti-gay discrimination directly into the constitution, and would define as the only legal relationship a marriage between one man and one woman. Amendment One would immediately make domestic violence victims ineligible for protection orders and would even remove children from their unmarried parents’ health insurance.

“Can I make it any clearer? Dads, the second you see that son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give them a good punch. OK? You’re not going to act like that — you were made by God to be a male and you’re going to be a male,” Pastor Harris tells his parishioners in this audio, via Jeremy Hooper at Good As You.

“And when your daughter starts acting too ‘butch,’ you rein her in. And you say, ‘Oh no. Oh no, sweetheart. You can play sports. Play ‘em, play ‘em to the glory of God, but sometimes you’re going to act like a girl and talk like a girl and talk like a girl, and smell like a girl, and that means you’re going to be beautiful, you’re going to be attractive, you’re going to dress yourself up’.”

Note: I’m not knowledgeable on North Carolina law, but I have to wonder if parents would be subject to arrest if they followed Pastor Harris’ directions.

Hooper, whose done an excellent job in the fight against Amendment One, offers the above audio, and the one below, and writes:

Did you miss “Marriage Sunday,” the day (this past Sun.) that the Vote For Marriage NC coalition set aside and told pastors to use their campaign materials in order to preach in favor of Amendment 1? Well here, let Berean Baptist Church’s Sean Harris give you a taste of what you missed:

Via Pastor Harris’ Berean Baptist Church website:

Sean Harris is the Senior Pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, NC. He is Berean’s fourth pastor in its 40 plus years of existence. Berean called Sean to be the Senior Pastor in March of 2006.

His responsibilities include the preaching and teaching the Word of God, casting the vision for the ministry, the leadership of staff and faculty members, administration of Berean Baptist Academy, communication with church members, and personal discipleship.

Pastor preaches during the worship services on Sunday mornings and evenings and teaches the church’s pre-membership class. He also teaches at the Academy.  Pastor also provides audio commentaries on news worthy items throughout the week for www.sermonaudio.com.

This 'pastor' is going to cause so much hurt. And, by-the-way, not every gay man wanted to wear a dress when they were little boys; not every gay man had a 'limp wrist' when they were a little boy. Would the pastor slap Michele Bachmann's husband? He is a limp-wristed man. Profiling is ugly.

This guy should be arrested for inciting physical violence and child abuse. Jeez, religious fredom doesn't give you the right to commit child abuse!

jbandsma May 1, 2012 at 4:24 pm

In NC and several other states it does. Religious exemptions. You practically have to kill the kid to get a slap on the wrist. Actually killing the kid will get 18 months to 3 years.

The problem with baptists is they don't hold them under long enough.

kenshin_kyo May 1, 2012 at 8:32 pm

Not All Baptists think like this nut. I have friends and family that are gay and bi, as well as every size, shape, color, religion, male, female, and heck some not even human :) And I am a Baptist.

chri5t0pher May 1, 2012 at 11:53 pm

Not enough Baptists speak up and condemn these types of statements. If the preacher in my church said anything like this he would be ran out of town. And if he wasn't then he would find the pews empty the next sunday.

kenshin_kyo May 2, 2012 at 11:05 am

Agreed many don't, but there are a few of us who, think that it is not up to us to judge how others are made, and that we are to live by example by loving our neighbors and help everyone we can, no matter who they are. And any one who believes Christ died for them will go to heaven, no matter who they are or what they did.

The reason that fringe hatemongers like this crackpot are coming out of the woodwork is that they realize their days are numbered. Society is coming to realize that people like him are the true deviants among us, encouraging violence and child abuse. He and his kind will be squashed, like the filthy cockroaches that they are, under the boot of progress and social enlightenment!

When Ronnie Paris, Jr. was 3, his father thought he seemed gay so he beat him to death. The mother knew of the ongoing beatings but didn't report them to the police because she "didn't want to get him in trouble."

The Devil of Demons is alive and well and hiding behind God in North Carolina! He should be ashamed for what he said! HATE is HATE no matter how you disguise it!

MarkVA71 May 1, 2012 at 6:04 pm

Christian fundamentalism is truly worship of the Devil.

_Sola_ May 1, 2012 at 6:05 pm

Yeah, because it's so so manly to beat and bully a 4 year old child. This 'pastor' makes me sick.

scottsteaux63 May 1, 2012 at 6:54 pm

Somebody ought to squash YOU like a cockroach, *Pastor.*

cortana May 1, 2012 at 7:18 pm

If I were any closer to North Carolina, I'd do just that next Sunday.

caligirl61 May 1, 2012 at 7:20 pm

Can a church still retain their nonprofit church status and still support and preach political propositions? I bet the IRS would be interested in this preachers political involvement. When growing up I never remember such violence being preached by our pastors against anyone different. Why is today's Christianity so full of hate and violence?

sweetnnekked May 1, 2012 at 7:32 pm

If we can learn anything from the past regarding pastors who spew hatred towards gays, it's that they usually end up being found out to be closeted homosexuals themselves! This guy may have a wife but somewhere down the road he'll be begging for her forgiveness for schtupping all the young men in the parish who sought his advice and comfort.

anniej May 1, 2012 at 10:17 pm

agree

DonnaSC May 1, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Someone needs to alert Mrs. Harris of her inevitable reality! Some men use hostility and violence toward homosexuals to reassure themselves about their own sexuality. He sucks it lady!

I also don't believe we make our kids gay, bi or straight by what we teach them. I do think most people are born to be what they become, and Girl who likes to "hang" with acts the guys does make her gay or a slut. Same goes with guys, a Boy who plays with dolls don't make him gay, but no mater gay or straight, can make him a better dad.

stopthehatestopthehurt May 1, 2012 at 9:50 pm

Incitement of violence and promotion of child abuse. He should be in jail.

DWSinger May 1, 2012 at 10:03 pm

Don't hate or banish GOD's creation!

anniej May 1, 2012 at 10:15 pm

It sounds as if this pastor is "preaching" to himself. Like he needs to convince himself. Very sad.

KLSiegel May 1, 2012 at 11:13 pm

This man is unfit to be a parent, a partner, or a pastor. For anyone to claim the faith of the gospels, and preach such utter despicable and disgusting filth – truly, this reader understands very well what the desolating sacrilege is, and where it ought not to be: filth and hate and violence preached as "God's word" so as to lead astray the faithful. And Jesus weeps to see the twisted, sick perversion of the message he came to preach.

rogerwolsey May 1, 2012 at 11:37 pm

I don't pretend that I can ever change a person, but… perhaps Pastor Harris might be open to hearing my journey from homophobia to becoming a pastor who is a straight ally of the LGBTQI community. http://www.patheos.com/blogs/faithforward/2012/04

JohnBNYC May 2, 2012 at 5:09 pm

Sean Harris should get his OWN house in order before he starts telling others how to live. His wife's little indiscretions with members of his own church don't seem to matter much to him. I guess he takes his anger out on kids. Sad.

marilynsmama May 2, 2012 at 10:18 pm

This pastor dares to call himself a follower of Jesus Christ. He better try reading his bible again.

The words of Sean Harris endorse child abuse: Children and youth seldom have a voice … please support the safety, security and welfare of children and youth. Stand up and speak out against this abuse. Let all children and GLBT youth know they are not alone! Let your voice be heard.

Human rights are inalienable. They are fundamental rights. I am, you are, we are all inherently entitled to them simply because we are human beings. I cannot disregard his contempt for human rights. Sean Harris’s remarks are barbarous and should outrage the conscience of mankind. I do not understand how sane and rational people support this man and his ministry.

We need strong GLBT leadership who will promote fundamental human rights and promote the dignity and worth of the human person, and promote social progress and a better standard of life. Every child should feel secure in the love of their family!

We need GLBT leadership to promote human rights as noted in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person. No one, no one on earth should ever be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

All children have the right to a safe and secure home, neighborhood and community. They have the right to be who they were born.

We need sane rational and humane people who will stand up and speak out to ensure that the rights of the voiceless are represented. No matter the age; all are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law.

Children and youth are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of the human rights declaration and against any incitement to discrimination. There is no rational ground for a child to be abused. No child should be subjected to abuse and harassment or exclusion based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

We cannot allow these human rights to be ignored! No youth should ever be subjected to abuse, persecution and prosecution for simply being who they are.

The words of Sean Harris endorse child abuse: Children and youth seldom have a voice … please support the safety, security and welfare of children and youth by standing up and speaking out, let all children and GLBT youth know they are not alone! Let your voice be heard.
