There is a good chance Rep. Michele Bachmann may lose her Congressional seat in November, but she’s not going down without a lie-filled fight that will leave her with a huge golden parachute. Bachmann is in a statistical tie with her Democratic opponent, and just sent a “confidential” fundraising email claiming that the “liberals working to defeat me have seen the work I have accomplished in Washington, and are shaking in their boots,” adding “the national Democrat attack machine” is “slandering my name and record of experience.”
So, what’s Bachmann’s “record of experience”? Politifact last year, in response to then-GOP presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty’s claim that Bachmann has barely any legislative accomplishments and is not known for getting results, reports that “Bachmann has served in Congress since 2006, and hasn’t sponsored anything that’s become law.”
Bachmann does not have many legislative victories under her belt.
Instead, Bachmann seems to prefer offering legislation that makes a bold statement. This year, she proposed making the Bush tax cuts permanent, stripping President Barack Obama’s health care law of funding, overturning new energy efficiency standards for light bulbs and repealing the financial regulatory overhaul that passed just last year. None of those bills has received a vote from the full U.S. House of Representatives.
Bachmann has served in Congress since 2006, and hasn’t sponsored anything that’s become law. Her most successful proposals were a 2008 resolution expressing support for agencies that provide services to foster children and a 2009 resolution to designate September as “National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month”. (Hydrocephalus is a buildup of fluid inside the skull, leading to brain swelling, which can be fatal.) Both measures were approved by the House but not the Senate.
Here’s a portion of the text of Bachmann’s lie-filled fundraising email (image, above):
Friend, the consequences of this election are grave. All of our conservative values and beliefs are on the line. It is “now or never” time for conservatives, and we must work now to ensure victory in November.
My multi-millionaire opponent is pouring his own fourtune into his campaign and if the past few months are any clue- he will certainly be intensifying his personal contributions — and personal attacks on me — over these last few weeks.
I can only begin to express how important your donation is today. Your contribution of $25, $50, $100 or more will go immediately towards fighting back on TV against my hyper-liberal union-backed opponent and will guarantee our campaign is able to report strong fundraising numbers.
You see, I am not only fighting back against my opponent, but I am also fighting back against the national Democrat attack machine and liberal “Super PACS” that have targeted my campaign for defeat. Together, they will pump millions of dollars to flood the Minnesota airwaves with propaganda, slandering my name and record of experience.
The liberals working to defeat me have seen the work I have accomplished in Washington, and are shaking in their boots. They know a Republican led majority in Congress will overturn their liberal policies and begin making the cuts necessary to restore our economy.
Remember, like the rest of Congress, Michele Bachmann is currently on a paid vacation until after the election.
Nice work if you can get it.
Whether she wins or loses, federal election laws allow here to keep, forever, her campaign funds.
