Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) issued the following statement today in response to the news that Uganda’s “Kill The Gays” bill may soon become law.

“I’m disturbed by the news that Uganda is considering going ahead with a measure that denies the humanity of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.”

“I was pleased when the Financial Services Committee overwhelmingly, in a bipartisan way, voted in favor of my amendment urging the Secretary of the Treasury to oppose any financial assistance from multilateral development institutions to countries that persecute people on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity or religious beliefs. In the discussion of the amendment I offered, I specifically mentioned the deeply troubling case of Uganda, which is now considering legislation to legally deprive people of these basic human rights.”

“If the bill before the Ugandan parliament becomes law, it must be the policy of the United States government to oppose any aid to Uganda from the World Bank, the African Development Bank, or any other international financial institution of which we are a member.”

Uganda’s infamous “Kill The Gays” bill, which would provide the death penalty for the “crime” of being gay, is about to become law, based upon current reports and the surrounding political situation in the staunchly conservative and Christian East African country. The bill has been debated in the Uganda Parliament for the past two days, and may come to a vote in the next 24 hours, which is when the current session of Parliament concludes, although it could be brought up in an extraordinary session through May 18.

Our aid should have been pulled long ago!!

Uganda is not the only African country that is persecuting LGBT persons and is also heavily dependent upon foreign aid. I have been saying for months that the only way to get these governments to pay attention is to TURN OFF THE MONEY TAP. After all, as my father taught me, "Money talks, bullshit walks!"

<< Mark 8:36 >>
What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? In this case please keep your Aid, we keep our Morals….

Americans HAVE Morals. And, yes, we'd rather keep our Aid.

Leviticus 18:22
“‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.

Can we start stoning the straights too for breaking the commandments? Don't go quoting the Bible if you're willing to live by the whole Bible. If you know of someone who has children out of wedlock of got a divorce, please let me know, they need to be stoned to death.

No we shouldn't, and neither should we kill gay people.
But let us make our laws, the bill largely seeks, to define family as that between man and wife, and the extreme suggestion of sentencing to death gays that defile and infect minors with HIV have been deleted. the bill never suggested that they kill all gay people, that was propaganda

Noni
ofcos you do have morals…….
and keeping "your" AID is not as straight forward as u think, America has interests, and to achieve those interests it uses both Aid(Carrot) and Stick(weapons) to achieve American interests.

By the way many of us Ugandans wish Aid would stop, we could trade our way out of poverty, if the field was fair….(but this is another economic debate)

You talk about moral but agree to kill people. Ops, sorry, "gay people".

Kenneth Ntulume May 12, 2011 at 7:51 am

Interesting answer Randy. Thanks. Yes we all sinners, no doubt. and let me be clear on this Gay people are God's people as well, my point of bother is continuously living in sin, and accepting sin as normal, for example lying is sinful, and ive lied before, and most probably would, at some not so distant time, but that doesn't make lying okay, and if the state, chooses to legislate against lying, i/we shouldn't complain.
In addition btw, the bill never suggested that gays should be killed, its suggestion was sentence to death those who defiled, minors and infected them with HIV, but since then due to the fact that that already exists in the penal code, it has been deleted, the actual bills name is the family relations bill.
