BREAKING NEWS: Gay Marriage Bill Passes Maine Senate. After last week’s huge turnout of three thousand people at a public hearing, and after the Maine Legislature Judiciary Committee’s passage of a gay marriage bill, it was not expected that the full Senate would vote on the legislation until next week. But in a surprise and expedited move, Maine’s Senate has passed a gay marriage bill by a 20 – 15 margin. The senate also rejected an amendment to the bill that would require a referendum on same-sex marriage to be placed on the ballot at the November elections.
The House still needs to vote on the bill, and Governor John Baldacci, although publicly opposed to same-sex marriage, has been said to be keeping an open mind.

Now doubt lee – I haven't been able to keep up either! It's all great news though, so even though my heads spinning from it all, I'm thrilled. Thanks so much for keeping on top of all the happenings David!!!
The news! It's too fast!
I can't keep up (following #FireFoxx today).
Have we got New Hampshire surrounded then? Come out with your bigotry up!
Don't get too excited. I live in Maine and it's a very Conservative Democrat State. What will likely happen is it will pass through the House next week, then the Senate again, and IF the Governor signs it into law (which I doubt), it will still be overturned by referendum. They only need 55,000 signatures to get it on the November ballot, and that's not hard. The Catholic Diocese has been campaigning nonstop against it, and groups as far away as the South and Midwest have been arriving by the boatload to protest.
I'm hoping I'm wrong – but I've seen Maine show its bigotry too many times. Love my State, hate the people. Keep hoping though, guys.
