Chick-Fil-A: Just When You Thought The Battle Had Flamed Out…

While we here at The New Civil Rights Movement never did an official postmortem look at the whole Chick-Fil-A brouhaha, we certainly have covered the issue more (dozens upon dozens of articles) — and more in-depth — than any other site, including a piece I wrote that went viral over at The Huffington Post.

Americans, sadly, have a bothersomely quick habit of forgetting — and fast.

So, let me let you know that NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, is not forgetting, and neither are the other anti-gay organizations and hate groups.

You see, the right finally found something they think unites them more than “liberty,” “religious freedom,” or even their shared hatred of “Barack Hussein Obama.” No, it’s not racism, although I wouldn’t yet rule that out in the radical right wings. It’s “chikin’.”

NOM just moments ago announced they’re extending the Mike Huckabee inspired Support Chick-Fil-A Day into “Chick-Fil-A Wednesdays.” Of course, all they’re trying to do is jump on the bandwagon — and they’re literally attaching their logo to the Chick-Fil-A icon, which, if Chick-Fil-A wanted to sue they’d probably have a good case. But they won’t — which, tacitly, is an endorsement.

Because of the groundbreaking significance of Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day—and because the attacks on Dan Cathy and his freedom to speak out in defense of marriage aren’t going away—we’re calling on all supporters of marriage, free speech and religious liberty to make every Wednesday a “Chick-fil-A Wednesday!

So writes NOM President Brian Brown in his latest fundraising email. Keeping the dream of white anti-gay nationalism.

Brown and American Family Association hater Bryan Fischer are looking at their Chick-Fil-A success as an indication that all the people who came out to show their bigotry and hate for the price of a piece of chicken and a few waffle fries will stand in lines equally long in November to cast their vote for a man they can barely stomach. Yes, the gratification of voting for Mitt Romney is just as good as a Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich. or so the anti-gay radicals are hoping.

By the way, last week I was invited to talk about Chick-Fil-A with civil rights attorney and former New York City council candidate Yetta Kurland, on her progressive radio show, along with Marriage Equality USA‘s Cathy Merino-Thomas.

If you’re looking to hear some thoughts about Chick-Fil-A you hadn’t heard before, have a listen. Our segment starts about halfway in.

If I had a nickle for every business that I could boycott for their idiotic stance on making LGBT people feel less than human, well, I'd have a LOT of nickles!

Did anyone else notice that the NOM banner announcing Chick-Fil-A Wednesdays has an inappropriate apostrophe? I can't say I'm terribly surprised, since ignorance of human rights also seems to coincide with ignorance about the English language.

This sickens me so much, mainly because I've still seen likes from friends on certain comments, such as liking comments gay people made on Chick-Fil-A's wall in support of them. Both those posters and my friends liking them have been so ignorant for why this really is a big deal. This sums it up quite nicely: http://equallyworthy.webs.com/ (I hope you'll allow the link, it is not spam)

This is what I posted on FB minutes ago regarding this article… posted to those who know me… I"m NOT necessarily pointing fingers at you / on here: NOM (The National Organization For Marriage): "…we’re calling on all supporters of marriage, free speech and religious liberty to make every Wednesday a 'Chick-fil-A Wednesday!'" What about supporting marriage? You deprive me of one if I want it. Freedom of speech? You cry and scream if I use mine. Religious liberty? Believe what you want… but what about my religious liberty? If I believe differently than you do about anything, you want to break away into your own little separate group and cut me off. That is not love… that is not Christianity or liberty and justice for all! You have your right to support companies that back the murder and squashing of gay people around the world. I have the right to protest it. I have the right to support companies that support equal rights for ALL people. You have the right to protest that. Just because I believe something differently than you, does NOT mean I want to throw away our friendship. If we all did that, we would have no friends at all. Or, is it that I speak up when you are used to such things being kept quiet because of "oh the shame!"? Was it loving to keep the abuse of women or the pregnancy of a single girl quiet because of shame? I tell you what, I am not ashamed of who I am any longer… or that I'm gay. It took a lot of years living through an era where the shame kept many quiet and killed many more before I learned not to hate or loath myself. I want equal rights under the law. If some people, whether Christian or not, cannot tolerate our differences or diversities, perhaps those persons need to search their souls for a that dark place that holds fear, hatred, embarrassment of their differing neighbors, and self righteousness that gives them an assumed right to judge or push away people just because they are different than themselves. We are all different… we all want to love and be loved by one another. It is painful to realize that some do, for the sake of the comfort of everyone I'll say, "dislike" those that are different or those that "make waves" and don't keep it "under the rug". While I don't hate myself any longer, it is hurtful to me that you do. In the past 6 months, I've been threatened physically and otherwise, had dislike and disapproval thrown my way, been abandoned by some that called me friend, been stared at with disgust, had remarks hurled at me like daggers by some… and yes, if I thought about it long enough, more. Hey, I like Chick-fil-A's chicken. It's tasty stuff. But when they support the behaviors I've experienced most of my life, whether verbally or quietly with dollars, they are still a part of the perpetuation of pain for many many people including the children growing up today. I don't share my own sufferings often with those who are around me every day. I bring it up today so that maybe you can see that you are really hurting those people that are different than you and the kids that are different than your kids… even your own kids. You can hurt me if you like… while I never quite get used to it, I've got broad shoulders. Don't hurt the younger generation that is trying to grow up in love and find happiness… don't kill their souls. Think I'm being extreme? Look again, it's real. I wanna' reiterate something from earlier: What about supporting marriage? You deprive me of one if I want it. Freedom of speech? You cry and scream if I use mine. Religious liberty? Believe what you want… but what about my religious liberty? Do I get none of these because YOU are right?

I hope Romney will win this coming election.
