State senator Harold Metts late this afternoon told the Rhode Island Judiciary Committee that “a cosmic battle between God and Satan” is the reason he opposes same-sex marriage, “whether we like it or not.”

The audio is below.

Metts, 67 and a Democrat, has served the Ocean State since 2004. He is the Vice Chair of the Education Committee.

Many thanks to Jeremy Hooper of Good As You for the audio and image.

Hopefully, people will realize that people like this are delusional. Anytime you base a moral decision on dogma, you are delusional. Satan is the bugaboo of the religious loonies. To attribute to "Satan" (or any symbol of evil) is to smugly dodge the awful truth of the argument from evil: God, if he exists, is either a total shithead or he is impotent to prevent evil. He cannot be both omnipotent and good. Satan was dreamed up to explain evil. Why, then, do religious nuts claim that good will prevail? They cannot have it both ways. But they always try, as witness this fool.

Apparently he doesn't understand that it's NOT up to him … it's up to his constituents, you know, those people who voted for him … the ones he's supposed to represent … VOTE HIM OUT!!!

Unfortunately, that's not likely. Metts ran unopposed in the 2012 Democratic primary, and got more than 90% of the vote in the general election. The last time he face opposition in the primary, in 2010, he beat his challenger by 40 percentage points. It would take an act of God to dislodge him, and as the honorable senator would be the first to tell you, God clearly wants him to be in office.

We need to vote the homophobes, racists and misogynists out of the Democratic Party.

Excuse me, Senator, but when you took office you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution; you did NOT place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible.

"I did not go to theology school; all I do is read Sunday School lessons."

At your age you should be ashamed of being so biblically illiterate instead of proud of being so STUPID.
