Dan Savage has introduced a new campaign to thank the straight allies who helped in the marriage equality fight. Is there someone you would like to thank?
Noted Savage Love author and gay icon Dan Savage has rolled out a new project this week. Dan, you may recall, together with his husband Terry Miller, founded the It Gets Better campaign, in which celebrities record videos reassuring bullied LGBT youth there is light at the end of the coming out tunnel. Now Dan has created “Straight Up Thanks,” an online forum for the LGBT community to thank their straight friends and allies who worked for the marriage equality ballot measures that passed in Washington, Maryland and Maine or who helped beat back an anti-gay marriage amendment in Minnesota.
The Straight Up Thanks website invites any “queer person whose straight friends worked hard to win marriage equality” to upload a photo of their friends, along with a few sentences about the way their friends contributed to the cause. It also sends out a general thank you to all the straight people who helped promote marriage equality.
“We couldn’t have done it without them.” Dan reminds the LGBT community. So if you know a straight someone who helped the same-sex marriage cause, here’s your chance to publicly say thanks. You can upload your entry here.
