Pope Francis: Smacking A Child To Punish Them Can Be ‘Just’ And ‘Beautiful’
Pope Francis shocked advocates for abused children when he illustrated smacking a child.
Pope Francis is under fire for comments he made Wednesday in support of corporal punishment. After speaking about the importance of fatherhood and proclaiming “every family needs a father,” the 78-year old pontiff on Wednesday shared a story about a father who punishes his children by smacking them. During that same address the Pope also announced support for bans against same-sex marriage to “defend the family.”

“At times I have to smack my children a bit, but never in the face so as not to humiliate them,” the man said, according to the Pope, who described the act as beautiful and just.
“How beautiful,†Francis told his audience of 7000 people. “He had a sense of dignity. He has to punish them but does it justly and then moves on.â€
Children’s rights advocates are angered.
“I think that is a very misguided thing to have said and I’m surprised he said it,” Peter Saunders, the founder of the National Association for People Abused in Childhood, told The Telegraph. Saunders himself was abused by Catholic priests as a child.
The Vatican was quick to try to minimize the damage.
“This Pope is always astounding us because he uses the same language we use. Naturally there will be psychologists who protest, but they make me laugh,â€Â Father Antonio Mazzi said.Â
Rev. Thomas Rosica denied the Pope was advocating violence against children, insisting he merely was speaking about “helping someone to grow and mature.”
Perhaps @Pontifex should teach parents how to love their children unconditionally –not hit them. Spanking only teaches that hitting is ok

No. Never. Nope. Wrong. @AP Pope Francis says spanking children is acceptable – with some restrictions: http://t.co/irwacH4Iec

@Pontifex I have 2 children w/spec needs. All spanking taught them was that someone who loves them, hit them. Where’s the dignity in that?

To be clear: and old male virgin saying it’s ok to beat your kids does not mean it’s ok to beat your kids. .@Pontifex #spanking
