WATCH – Rep. John Lewis: I Don’t See Donald Trump as a ‘Legitimate President’
Sees ‘Conspiracy on the Part of the Russians and Others’
U.S. Rep. John Lewis says he doesn’t see President-elect Donald Trump as legitimate. The Democratic congressman from Georgia who is a civil rights icon was asked by NBC News’ Chuck Todd if he would try to forge a relationship with Trump when he becomes president.
“I believe in forgiveness,” Rep. Lewis, who worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to help organize and spoke at 1963’s historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, says in the above video. “I believe in trying to work with people. It will be hard. It’s going to be very difficult. I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president.”
Citing what he sees as a “conspiracy on the part of the Russians and others,” Rep Lewis says, “I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected. And they helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton.”Â
And he will, for the first time in nearly 30 years not be attending Trump’s swearing-in ceremony next week.
“I don’t plan to attend the inauguration. It will be the first one that I miss since I’ve been in Congress. You cannot be at home with something that you feel that is wrong, is not right.”
