Debate A Hate Group? Why?

(Note: above email was corrected to read “without” editing. No one’s perfect!)

Regular readers know that last Friday, after two posts highlighting American Family Association’s American Family Radio General Manager Buster Wilson’s ludicrous statements that gay marriage will lead to people marrying buildings, dogs, and cars, Wilson, via his blog, invited me to discuss the issue on his radio station.

READ:

Christian “Family” Group Head Brands The New Civil Rights Movement A “Homosexual Hate Group”

Christian Group Gives New Meaning To Words “I Really Love My New Car”

I’ve declined, as you can see from the email I sent today, above.

The American Family Association is an SPLC-certified hate group. They are not interested in an honest debate, rather, they are interested in doing what they exist to do: attack the LGBT community, spread lies and falsehoods about LGBT people, and ensnare as much money from their shrinking base as possible, until they can no longer sustain their operations.

If reasonable-minded people disagree with this assessment of the AFA, it show be sufficient proof that Wilson, immediately prior to his invitation to me, called The New Civil Rights Movement a “homosexual hate group.” I’ve been called many things in my 49 years, but a hate group? What proof does Wilson — whose own employer has met all the published criteria of a hate group, and thus, received the “award” — have, I ask? There is none.

Most folks who read The New Civil Rights Movement know all-too-well the American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer, who has a daily talk show that Wilson, in his role as the General Manager for American Family Radio oversees.

Bryan Fischer has said gays are Nazis, suggested that millions of Americans contracted HIV/AIDS because of the existence on Congressman Barney Frank, gays are not born gay, the Tea pArty ended slavery in America, gays are a threat to national security, public health, and traditional marriage is necessary for US survival, the same hate, vitriol, and anti-Christ spirit is at work in Islam and in the “homosexual agenda,” Chaz Bono, “is a surgically-mutilated female,” “Let’s have a state law that provides some kind of fine for anyone who has unprotected homosexual sex,” called for the re-criminalization of homosexuality in every state, homosexuality “is a death sentence, it’s not a lifestyle, it’s a death style,” California is going to have a hard time fulfilling SB 48 because “by definition,” gays cannot be role models, the Norway terrorist would have made a good Muslim but a bad Christian, “Hitler hiomself was a homosexual,” “we cannot have the homosexual agenda and liberty. Those two things are incompatible,” criticism of and Marcus and Michele Bachmann over the practice of “ex-gay therapy” is both religious bigotry and a hate crime, “homosexual bigots commit hate crimes,” “Christophobic gay activists” want to “continue a campaign of threats, harassment…,” “homosexual activists” who attack him for his hate speech and lies against theLGBT community are committing a “hate crime,” “fidelity in same-sex relationships is virtually unheard of,” the Nazi Party was formed in a gay bar in Munich,” once DADT is repealed, neither gays nor straights will sign up for the military, forcing a draft, Christian military officers are about to become victims of “systematic hate crimes,” by gays, and “the homosexual agenda is just like Islam.”

And all that’s just since May of this year.

As I said, I see no benefit to “debating” with anyone who supports these lies.

I disagree. A debate would be a thoroughly beneficial way of educating the opposition and the only reason not to accept is fear and cowardice.

And that's my opinion.

The way I read the article, David is only declining to debate on the radio program. In terms of maintaining any measure of integrity for a debate with 'these people' a written log – email – is the most secure format.

Equality is undebatable. Today's white supremacists, after all, never would have agreed to an end of slavery. Or to anti-discrimination laws that made it illegal for a country club to say "No Jews allowed." It is no coincidence that the KKK is maliciously anti-gay. To argue over whether homosexuality should be accepted is as absurd as to argue over whether heterosexuality should be accepted.

David — I support your position 1000% … As Barney Frank said to the woman who accused Barack Obama of being equivalent to Hitler, "Debating you would be like debating a kitchen table."

How do you debate with hate? How do you reason with those who lives are based on faith and fear, not reason?

These people should not be dignified with a debate — we just need to encourage them to keep opening their mouths and speaking, as they dig their own graves. If somebody agrees with their bigoted statements, they are in my mind retarded by definition. And its OK to be retarded, just don't expect your views to have any influence in our culture.

Why are they so afraid of commiting their ideas to pen and paper, and have a debate via email? Is it the same reason the prop 8 supporters don't want video of their court testimony released? These cowards lack the courage of their own conviction, and know that any sane person will reject everything they say with every fiber in their being. Of course inbreeding and retardation still exist, so their message will no doubt resonate in areas of the deep South and various mental institutions.

You should have accepted their offer to debate them.

The further question is "How do you debate anyone today when everything is so televised, that all arguments eschew facts for the sake of whipping up the crowd?"
