Post image for DOMA: Watch House “Defending Marriage” Hearing’s Lies And Ignorance

DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act, was the subject of a hearing today convened for the explicit purpose of denigrating same-sex relationships, marriage equality, the LGBT community, the ability of same-sex-headed households to properly raise children, the Department of Justice, President Obama, and to portray the institution of, marriage as under attack from the Left.

Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), a “birther” and climate change denier who said he would “absolutely…support” the impeachment of President Obama over the DOJ’s refusal to defend DOMA in court, was somewhat successful in rounding up two professional anti-gay activists, National Organization for Marriage Chair  Maggie Gallagher, ultra-conservative blogger and traditional-marriage advocate Ed Whelan, who happily pretended “Leave It To Beaver” was the number one television show and women are supposed to be barefoot and pregnant.

Fortunately, on our side the Left had Rep. John Conyers, Rep. Jerrold Nadler, and witness Carlos Ball. Ball, a Rutgers School of Law Professor, is the author of Closet to the Courtroom: Five LGBT Lawsuits That Have Changed Our Nation, and a marriage equality advocate.

Thanks for this “best of/worst of” mashup go to the good folks at Think Progress, and their new blogger, Zack Ford, who writes, “Gallagher repeatedly stated that children do better with a mother and a father, despite ample evidence that children of same-sex parents fair just as well, if not better.”

I listened to a bit of video, and well let me just say this, these stupid ass breeders who are wanting everyone to protect marriages, then divorce should NOT be an option. We can go back to the routine of chopping off the head of the wife so the husband can marry some bimbo he picked up at the stripper joint.

Did Maggie Gallagher really just call that congressman naive? And did she say that IF we were not in this hotly contested debate we would certainly agree…?

Hey gal: It IS a debate. And this IS the US Congress. And this DOES matter.

She never once offered any objective evidence. It was all "I think.." "I believe…" WTF?

This bullshit bigassbitch. Sorry =] Gosh I despise that woman so bad.

Were you really expecting any objective evidence in this farce called a 'hearing'. Everybody knows this is a waste of time. Maggie Gallagher and her republican bigots know they're on the losing side of history and demographics. But that never mattered to them. This is not about being on the right side. This is about using power to get your way, even at the cost of harming others. A fucked up country this is!

"For the children… for the children…"
What about the gay children, Ms. Gallagher? Are you going to "protect" them?
Of course not.

Rudy April 15, 2011 at 9:56 pm

So does this mean we are to discredit every heterosexual marriage that does not produce children?

Anyone notice how fidget-y she gets when Conyers pushes questions about NOM funding? Then she gets flip and tries to deflect to HRC (who are utterly transparent with their funding sources by the by) or to politicians campaign funding. She's a snake, and sooner or later she's gonna trip up. I bet Louis knows where some of the financial bodies are buried. This isn't over by a long shot. Wait till one of the DOMA or Prop 8 cases gets to the SCOTUS. As evidenced by the first Prop 8 trial, these shady folks really don't want to be put under oath to defend their bigotry to a judge. (specially after actively throwing three of them out in Iowa.
