Dozens of anti-gay groups joined in “religious liberty” by running an ad in USA Today (PDF) that tells the Boy Scouts to “show courage” by equating gay people with pedophiles, claiming the Scouts’ ban on gays is “part of the BSA’s efforts to protect Scouts from sexual abuse.” The ad warns dropping the Boy Scouts’ ban on gays is a “grave mistake,” and notes:
Last year BSA released their so-called “perversion files,” which contained the names of hundreds of sexual predators who had managed to hide their attraction to boys and enter the Boy Scouts.
Of course, leading the charge for the ad is the well-known certified anti-gay hate group, the Family Research Council, headed by Tony Perkins, and another certified anti-gay hate group, the American Family Association, home to the infamous Bryan Fischer.
Other groups include:
PFOX (Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays), Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, Liberty Counsel, Patriot Voices, Center for Military Readiness, Concerned Women for America and The Family Leader.
The ad came via an email from New Yorker’s Family Research Foundation with this interaction:
In partnership with the Washington-based Family Research Council and almost fifty other pro-family organizations across America, New Yorker’s Family Research Foundation is printing the following ad in today’s edition (Monday, February 4, 2013) of the USA Today.
It’s not “almost 50,” it’s 42, but facts rarely matter to extremists.
Editor’s note: A previous version of this article incorrectly identified “Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays” as “PFLAG.” It is PFOX. We apologize for our mistake.
