Family Research Council Labels Noted Civil Rights Group A Terrorist Organization

Post image for Family Research Council Labels Noted Civil Rights Group A Terrorist Organization

Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, in an email to supporters late last night decided to label the highly-respected Southern Poverty Law Center a terrorist organization. The SPLC is best known as the group of Montgomery, Alabama attorneys who took the KKK to court, ultimately reducing them from a group of domestic terrorists numbering up to six million to a small handful of a few thousand.

Today, the Southern Poverty Law Center monitors the activities of well-over one thousand hate groups — including the Family Research Council.

In order to be placed on the SPLC’s list of active hate groups, an organization has to demonstrate repeated intention to spread lies and falsehoods about a group of people. That is the definition of the Family Research Council.

“The United States may not negotiate with terrorists, but it certainly hasn’t minded using curriculum tied to them in official Army briefings,” Perkins wrote last night.

He is referring to a series of articles by debunked Fox News religion reporter Todd Starnes, who has published several articles claiming the U.S. Military, in training classes on understanding and recognizing extremism, listed the Family Research Council and the American Family Association as hate groups.

Since the Family Research Council and the American Family Association are hate groups, the military had every legitimate right to name them as such, but since that designation came from the Southern Poverty Law Center, Perkins is now labeling them “terrorists” — even on Twitter:

Perkins is also blaming the SPLC for the shooting by Chick-fil-A-carrying Floyd Lee Corkins at the Family Research Council’s Washington, D.C. headquarters:

Despite being linked in federal court to a case of domestic terrorism, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has been a go-to “source” of the Obama Pentagon in a string of military training sessions.

The Southern Poverty Law Center is the nation’s premier authority on extremism and hate groups of all types: anti-gay, neo-Nazi, Klansmen, white nationalists, neo-Confederates, racist skinheads, black separatists, border vigilantes, anti-government “Patriot” groups, militias, Anti-Muslim, Holocaust Deniers, Anti-Immigrant, and many more.

GLAAD’s Commentator Accountability Project (CAP) offers startling statements from Perkins. A sampling:

Facts

– Says about gay people: “They are intolerant. They are hateful. They are vile. They are spiteful”…”pawns” of the “enemy.” (See 1:30 mark.)

– Lumps together Aurora shooting, kidnapping, and openly gay soldiers as three examples of a “nation gone under”

– Says many gays have an “emptiness within them” (:55) because they are “operating outside of nature” (1:09)

– Says that gay young people “have a higher propensity to depression or suicide because of that internal conflict; homosexuals may recognize intuitively that their same-sex attractions are abnormal.

– Despite what health experts have said, insists that pedophilia is “a homosexual problem.”

– The Family Research Council has distributed a pamphlet that claims gay men are more likely to molest children, and supports “reorientation therapy” for gay people

– The Family Research Council has distributed a pamphlet that begins by likening the logic behind same-sex marriage to the logic behind man-horse marriage (complete with horse graphic)

– Compares gay legal advocates to terrorists (at 0:31 mark): “[B]ack in the 80s and early 90s, I worked with the State Department in anti-terrorism and we trained about 50 different countries in defending against terrorism, and it’s, at its base, what terrorism is, it’s a strike against the general populace simply to spread fear and intimidation so that they can disrupt and destabilize the system of government. That’s what the homosexuals are doing here to the legal system.”

Jeremy Hooper at Good As You last night noted that “the far-right anti-LGBT organizations hate nothing more than their own words. If the past two years have proven any axiom to be true, it’s this one. Time and time again, we see that all one has to do to really enrage a far-right anti-LGBT activist is to say, “Hey, look at this stuff you said” and ask him or her to take responsibility for it… And sometimes, when they get really Jesus-y? They equate those messengers with terrorists.”

Instead of pointing the finger at the SPLC and wrongly calling them “terrorists,” perhaps Perkins should mend his ways and stop allowing his organization to continue to act as a hate group.

To my knowledge no one from the SPLC has ever taken a shot at anyone. Some of the people Tony Perkins champions, however…

The dictionary definition of terrorism: The calculated use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature"

I don't remember the SPLC taking part in any actions that fit that definition. It usually keeps tabs on hate groups like the FRC and the AFA, which specialize in spreading intolerance and bigotry among the ignorant and undereducated.

Poor Tony–the further down the tubes he and his go the more sick and shrill their "message" becomes. He's a very disturbed individual.

This from the blood thirsty fascist barbarian Tony Perkins who cheers and calls for the rape, torture, beating, imprisonment/encampment, silencing, and MURDER of LGBT human beings just for breathing in Russia, Uganda, etc. He also publicly suggested that Middle Eastern countries ignore the UN resolution denouncing human rights violations against LGBT people which includes hanging LGBT people.

Tony Perkins and his grotesque fascist cult are the REAL terrorists. Incontestable FACT.

Tony dear: if you want to spend your time trying to nail Jell-O to the wall, that's fine by me…

Grasping at straws Tony? Seems a bit desperate.

Beware false prophet Perkins! "For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works." (2 Cor 11:13-15)

The SPLC's recent crusade against conservative Christian groups is little more than a marketing ploy. As its traditional, mostly elderly donor base erodes with the passing of time, the SPLC has set its fundraising sights on an often younger, often Progressive and often affluent LGBT community.

http://wp.me/pCLYZ-j9

Despite its claims of "aggressively defending LGBT rights for decades," the SPLC, which opened its doors in 1971, did not even designate its first "anti-gay hate group" until 2011, after 40 years of indifference.

Since 2011, the SPLC has filed or threatened to file law suits against two high schools and an impoverished junior high school. It has also attached itself to a simple copyright infringement case and a cut-and-dried malpractice suit, both involving gay plaintiffs.

In neither case are the plaintiffs indigent and the actual cases have been filed by leading local law firms that specialize in copyright and malpractice law. The term "civil rights" does not even appear in either complaint, so what exactly does "the nation's leading civil rights law firm" bring to the table?

In a word: Publicity. And Mark Potok, the SPLC's $150,000-a-year Public Relations guru will spin that publicity into fundraising gold. Last year well-meaning donors sent Mr. Potok more than $40 million in tax-free donations based on Potok's spurious "hate group" propaganda.

That works out to over $109,000 every single day, or more than $4,500 every single hour, and that figure does not include the $18 million in tax-free interest generated by the SPLC's quarter-BILLION dollar endowment fund.

With that kind of money at stake you really can't blame the SPLC for running its anti-Christian campaign. There are millions of tax-free dollars to be made by doing little more than sending out threatening letters to impoverished Black junior high schools. Some "experts"

You repeated, so will I:

Thanks for your opinion and unreferenced research on the SPLC, rkeefe57, but it doesn't matter (and lawyers and marketing guru's who only make $150,000 per year are CHEAP — I look forward to an equal report on the FRC from you if you think monies are the important criteria here!).

Even without the SPLC, anyone can listen to the FRC Family Research Council and tell that they lie, repeatedly after being informed of their errors, and they do harm, and those are the definitions of a hate group.

The SPLC has not listed many Christian organizations as hate groups, and I would not call the FRC a Christian organization because they lie, and that's anti-Christin, right?

YOU should call on the FRC and tell them to stop lying.

Please forward us a copy of your correspondence to the FRC where you call on them to stop lying about LGBTQ people.

Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you on this real soon.

My apologies for the double post. I'm not sure what you mean by "unreferenced" research as I provided a link that cites all of my sources, and every last one of those sources comes directly from the SPLC's own web site. Now if you want to debate the accuracy of their data, do let's shall.

My only point is that the SPLC's recent LGBT campaign is exactly that: recent and a campaign. If all of the SPLC's alleged anti-gay "hate groups" have been in business for decades, as the SPLC claims on its website, why did they not declare them as "hate groups" until 2011, some 40 years after opening shop?

And speaking of "hate groups," the Boy Scouts of America has discriminated against gay men and boys since their inception in 1910. In 2000, the BSA issued a press release stating:

"The BSA reaffirmed its view that an avowed homosexual cannot serve as a role model for the traditional moral values espoused in the Scout Oath and Law and that these values cannot be subject to local option choices."

The SPLC said nothing.

According to the SPLC website, "All hate groups have beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics."

Apparently, stating that an entire class of people "lack the moral values" to be Scouts or Scout Leaders doesn't meet the SPLC's stringent criteria for "attacking or maligning."

In fact, the SPLC didn't even mention the BSA on its website until 2012 when they finally took a stand on the issue, sort of. They wheeled out co-founder Joseph Levin, (who, in spite of having left the SPLC in 1976 is still drawing a $4,000-a-week paycheck, your donor-dollars at work) who issued possibly the most tepid statement in SPLC history.
http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/news/boy-sc

"Twelve years ago, the Southern Poverty Law Center stopped participating in the Montgomery, Ala., United Way campaign because the organization chose to fund the Boy Scouts of America despite its policy of excluding LGBT people from its ranks."

That was it. The SPLC's reaction to one of the most blatantly anti-gay organizations in the country was to stop donating money to the United Way (and the many useful charities it supports), and to say absolutely nothing about it for over a decade.

"Of course, the Boy Scouts of America doesn’t intend to encourage bigotry. But such policies can have that effect."

They don't intend to "encourage bigotry," Mr. Levin? The BSA went all the way to the US Supreme Court to enforce its perceived RIGHT to actively discriminate against gay men. It doesn't get much more intentional than the Supreme Court, Mr. Levin.

Where was the SPLC's multimillion dollar public relations machine in 2000, Mr. Blaise? Or 2005 or 2010? Your heroes could have brought enormous public pressure against the BSA but they did nothing. The term "hate group" doesn't even appear in Mr. Levin's pathetic apologia.

Thankfully, the Boy Scouts' ban on gay Scouts ended on Jan. 1, 2014, due precisely to negative public opinion. Their Supreme Court ruling still stands but they gave in because of overwhelming public pressure to which the "civil rights icons" at the SPLC contributed exactly nothing.

So why did the SPLC never make the leap to designating the BSA as a "hate group"? Because many of its donors were Scouts or the parents and grandparents of Scouts and linking the almighty donors with a "hate group" is bad for business. "Fighting hate" is all well and good until it cuts into the bottom line.

If this is your idea of effective advocacy for LGBT rights, Mr. Blaise, I respectfully disagree. The SPLC didn't even have an LGBT desk until 2011. My opinion, and that's all I claim it to be, is that the SPLC has merely jumped aboard the LGBT bandwagon as they see that community as a huge potential donor pool. If you can find any evidence to the contrary from the SPLC I will be most willing to discuss it with you.

Personally, I can think of many, many more charities, especially local food banks and shelters, who could do a lot more with a hundred dollar donation than to pay millionaire Joe Levin's absentee salary for an hour. Again, that is solely my opinion.
