Fischer: Gay Marriage And The First Amendment Cannot Exist Together In America

Post image for Fischer: Gay Marriage And The First Amendment Cannot Exist Together In America

Bryan Fischer, the public face of the certified anti-gay hate group, American Family Association, yesterday on his radio program said that gay marriage and the First Amendment cannot exist together in America. Fischer, who in the past has called gays Nazis, says that homosexuality and religious liberty cannot co-exist, and every win for gay rights is a loss for religious liberty.

Fischer states:

Every advance, of the homosexual agenda, comes at the expense of religious liberty. The single greatest threat to religious liberty in America today is the homosexual agenda. We cannot have religious liberty — in fact I would go so far as to say, we cannot have gay marriage and the First Amendment. We can’t have homosexuality and the First Amendment. If homosexuality is embraced and normalized, that’s the end of the First Amendment. It’s gone, it’s out here, shredded beyond recognition, a worthless piece of paper. Now I believe we should be free in America discriminate against homosexual behavior because if we don’t then it will be people of faith who will be discriminated against. It is not possible to have a discrimination-free society. We can’t have it. Either we are going discriminate against homosexual behavior or we are going to discriminate against Christianity.

Apparently, Bryan Fischer cannot imagine a world where every one exists in harmony, nor is he willing to accept the fact that millions upon millions of America’s faithful are fully embracing of same-sex marriage and LGBT civil rights.

It seems that Fischer is rapidly realizing his power to control bigotry and anti-gay hate is diminishing. Americans are, to use Fisher’s word of the week, discriminating, against hate, and that’s what makes him so angry.

There are certainly a LOT of people on the Conservative religious right who apparently failed U.S. civics classes at all levels. Worse, they're trying to foist their ignorance on an ignorant public. The blind leading the blind.

He is so far from wrong it's hard to explain to someone who doesn't understand the basis of equality.

This ignorant, bigoted, and fascist tea-bagger looks like an evil Ted Baxter, from the old Mary Tyler Moore show…

SouthPaw1962 June 6, 2012 at 5:59 pm

Sounds more like stupidity than ignorance if someone cannot understand how freedom of (and from) religion and SSM can co-exist. (Or willful obtuseness.)

Scott_Rose June 6, 2012 at 2:45 pm

The haters have been saying this forever, and have based whole day-long symposiums on it. Here's an example: http://law.liberty.edu/media/1190/2010symposium/L

Scott_Rose June 6, 2012 at 2:47 pm

But, it's extremely important to note that Fischer is not the only one pushing this idea. NOM's William Duncan, a close associate of Robert George, pushes this idea all of the time; he participated in the Liberty University symposium at the above link. And, Romney told Liberty University that he shares their "values."

Fischer should be challenged to sit down for a chat with Bishop V. Gene Robinson, retiring TEC bishop of NH and Bishop Mary Glasspool, TEC Bishop Suffragan of Los Angeles, for discussion of the meanings of religious liberty and the First Amendment.

Does this idiot realize that RELIGIOUS LIBERTY has nothing to do with people of the same sex, getting married as much as it gives a person the right to be or NOT to be religious! If religion is all about HATE, which I know it is not…and can give 100's of examples to prove him wrong…I'd be trying to outlaw religion, for almost the same reason as you, Brian…Except that I'm an educated truth speaker and you are a STUPID IDEOLOGICAL BIGOT!

I come to warn you today, just as the prophet Jonah warned the great city of Nineveh. Repent from you evil ways and turn to the one and true living God. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The God of Love and Truth.
For the Day of the Lord is coming. Repent and turn to the Lamb of God. Jesus Christ.
Don't let the Hardness of your heart or your sinful life Keep you from the Holy Father in Heaven.

Are you not going to even pretend to enter into discussion and dialogue? The exact same comment on multiple posts means you are as sad as all those spammers who want to sell their version of snake oil.

Actually, quite the opposite is true. By not allowing SSM, the government is infringing upon the freedom of religion of those religion(s) / denominations believe that God(s)/Goddess(es) in fact do bless same sex marriages. No one is forcing anybody to marry someone of the same sex nor is anyone trying to deny the right of heterosexual couples to be married. It's really simple, you are/will be free to believe that your God is offended by SSM and you can preach that in your church ALL YOU WANT.

lepidopteryx June 6, 2012 at 6:46 pm

Bryan, no one is going to force you to marry someone that your religion tells you is not a suitable spouse.

Thanks for your article David… it is so sa how ignorant and hateful a group of Americans are.

I posted it to my LGBT Group on LinkedIn and also made a comment there to spur members to read your article and to make comment. I also scooped it at Scoop. It on my LGBT Times news mashup.

I have the ability to place individuals on 100% moderation at any time and can remove and ban people from the group as necessary. If removed for hate speech I report them to LinkedIn.

Dvelco, I love that a group like this exists out in the internets. I am still in college, but when I graduate I want to work with teens experiencing adjustment issue, which would include LGBTQ youth. I would love to join the group when/if I get a job, which is a sad reality facing my generation.

It is good to see that people with good ethical values are out there and working for a good cause.
