A tweet by “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” repeal poster boy Lt. Dan Choi this morning reminded me of the landmark 1996 study that plainly states, “Homophobia is apparently associated with homosexual arousal that the homophobic individual is either unaware of or denies.”
The study, by Henry E. Adams, Lester W. Wright, Jr., and Bethany A. Lohr, and published by the American Psychological Association, runs forty-six pages, and includes references to “changes in penile circumference,” “penile plethysmography,” and calls homophobia “an anxiety-based phenomenon.”
The study also says, “Generally, these varied explanations conceive of homophobia as one type of latent homosexuality where persons either are unaware of or deny their homosexual urges. These data are consistent with these notions.”
