How “The Gays” Get Their Toasters

by David Badash on February 26, 2010

in Marriage,Successes

When I was growing up, it cost a dime to mail a letter, people mailed letters, and banks gave stuff away to get you to open an account with them. Stuff like dishes. And toasters.

For those of you too young to remember, there’s an old joke that was designed to fend off right-wing claims that gays had to recruit young people to further our numbers. Essentially, it went, “When homosexuals convert heteros, we get toasters…”

The good news… (I know, bad, bad joke!) these days is that gays don’t convert straights to get toasters, we get married. And before we get married, we get engaged. And when we get engaged, we register at Crate and Barrel. Just like Jonathan Howard and Gregory Jones. They’re registered — and in Crate and Barrel’s “Ultimate Wedding Contest.” Not only are they entered in the contest — but they’re actually in first place!

Fifty couples were chosen by the public. In April, a panel, headed by “A-list planner extraordinaire Jo Gartin,” will chose the winner.

How great for the cause of marriage equality would it be if Jonathan and Gregory were to be chosen the winners? It would be AWESOME! (And, maybe it would force Daily Candy — Crate and Barrel’s co-sponsor — to redo their heterosexist illustration…)

Jonathan and Gregory write,

“Boy meets boy, boy falls for boy, and boys get engaged. The pure existence of our love is not always accepted. We had to deal with hatred from outsiders and support one another in recovery. Our love story involves the evolution of the meaning of love and the perseverance that allowed two people such as us to openly experience happiness. We knew that we were right for each other from the start, we knew that we would always be by one another’s sides and that as best friends we could truly experience our love openly.”

What a beautiful story. Take a look at their page, then skip over to their registry. Boy, do they love to cook! Trust me, when we get married, our registry is going to have to be more Equinox, less Williams-Sonoma. (Well, actually, it WILL need to be more Williams-Sonoma, since there’s not much cookware in the cabinets!)

Here’s the happy couple. Vote for them, and for marriage equality. Please?

Of course, you can also join their Facebook group!

I voted for them earlier this week, what an amazing looking couple and their story really got me. I want to track them down and volunteer to be their wedding photographer :) :)

Thank you so much David we appreciate it! And unfortunately about 20 minutes ago another couple took over first place so we need all the votes we can get

David,

you say, "Trust me, when we get married, our registry is going to have to be more Equinox, less Williams-Sonoma. (Well, actually, it WILL need to be more Williams-Sonoma, since there’s not much cookware in the cabinets!)" Who is the we you are talking about?

I am the luckiest guy around. The man I'm going to marry is the greatest guy on earth!

Caleb February 28, 2010 at 4:13 am

I hope that I know the answer to my question!

Hmm… I've been reading the fine print. Turns out the winner of the contest isn't determined by the couple with the most votes:
Originality and creativity of Entrant’s responses to the topics (50%);
How well Entry invokes and inspires Crate and Barrel’s lifestyle (30%);
Entry’s Ranking in public voting (20%)
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I hope they win. I'm going to ask everyone I know to vote for them!!

Sean, I know, and I was thinking last night that Crate and Barrel could find themselves in the middle of a firestorm. If they chose a gay couple over a disabled police officer, they're going to get slammed from the right, and vice versa. The couple currently in 1st place, the police officer and his fiance, have a blog with some nasty, homophobic comments on it that really were offensive.

I hope Jonathan and Gregory win. It would do so much for us. And they seem like such an awesome couple! We need more great role models in the public eye. And heck, they're just so sweet!

Wow, David. I just saw that page with all the hateful, bigoted comments. It's really sad people feel the need to go there. Weddings are supposed to be about joy and affirmation. Words like the ones I read make me want to fight all the much harder for our rights and work to help Jonathan & Gregory win their dream wedding! I really hope this story gets picked up by mainstream media. People need to know their story

David Badash February 28, 2010 at 2:33 am

Sean, you are so awesome! Maybe Rachel Maddow will get wind of it…

Jonathan February 28, 2010 at 7:30 am

Thank you guys all, we will do what we can to get the story picked up by anybody, at this point the contest is bigger than us, its about stopping the hate and marriage equality. Victory is the best revenge!

Does anybody have a link to the Cole's homophobic blog? Thanks!

Sean March 2, 2010 at 12:28 am

I think the hosting website took the blog down due to complaints – hate speech

you guys disgust me…. it is because of PC idiots like you all, we cannot say merry christmas, or say certain words like fag or just call a bloody spade a spade….. i don';t care if you are gay…. just stay out of the genepool… and adopt those poor orphans for heavens sake… and stop trying to force your homo views on the rest of us who don't like it… Homosexuality is biological and the more of you homos pair off and never produce biological children .. the better…
