If The Republican Almost-First Lady Can Support Marriage Equality, Why Can’t Michelle Obama?

Cindy McCain

I have to admit, when I read Megan McCain’s tweets earlier today, saying,

“I couldn’t be more proud of my mother for posing for the NOH8 campaign. I think more republicans need to start taking a stand for equality…and civil rights in this country and set the example that this is not a partisan issue”

I was like, meh. But then I saw the photo, and I thought, “GREAT!”

Thank you, Cindy McCain for supporting equality, especially given your position in politics.

So, if the Republican wife of the Republican 2009 presidential candidate — the woman who almost was this country’s first lady —  can come out in support of equality, why can’t the Democratic wife of the Democratic president? I’m the last person to criticize Mrs. Obama for her extraordinary efforts. I’m just asking her to add one more cause to her list.

Thank you, as well, to Meghan McCain for her unwavering support. It’s great to see that politics doesn’t trump civil rights.

Now, if we could just get John McCain on board…

As pleased as I am to see Meghan and Cindy McCain come out for gay marriage, as have Dick Cheney, Gerald Ford and other top Republicans, let's pause long enough to note that they all did so AFTER they or their poltician loved one was no longer running for top political office. Add Bill Clinton to that list as well. That is a luxury Michelle Obama does not yet have. Does that excuse the failure of Michelle and Barack Obama, or Hillary Clinton, to come out for gay marriage? Of course not. But let's not draw equivalences that just aren't there.

@Chris: exactly. I get tired of this lameness some people have in comparing the actions of someone out of office (Cindy McCain is not the wife of the President) and someone in office (Michele Obama's husband.) It's so convenient for retired military personnel to stand up for DADT, so easy former Vice-Presidents (Dick Cheney) to say he supports marriage equality but it's a whole different ballgame for those in office.

Posts like this reveal an immaturity and lack of acknowledging reality when it comes to politics and allies. A post like this makes me understand why it appears that those in power who are our allies occasionally have to turn a deaf ear to ridiculousness actually get the work done.

My sentiments exactly. Read my blog post at http://newsericks.com/all-in-the-noh8-family in which I take Sen. McCain to task (in verse) for his position.
