Post image for Kobe Bryant Calls Ref A “Fucking Fag” On Camera (Video)

Kobe Bryant, the L.A. Lakers basketball and media superstar, during Tuesday night’s game against the Spurs — after being forced to sit down — threw a towel to the floor, then, with the TNT camera still focused on him, called the referee a “fucking fag.”

Bryant, a 32-year old shooting guard, is famous not only for his prowess on the court and many multi-million dollar advertising endorsement contracts, but for being accused of sexual assault in 2003.

Apology accepted. Frustrated players say much worse than what was said by Bryant. I have been to games where players such as Dennis Rodman and any number of NY Knicks fans, coaches, players have spewed much worse from their foul mouths in the heat of the momment.

chandler bing April 13, 2011 at 6:24 pm

Gays are so sensitive, first off it was in the heat of the game and players coaches and fans have said worse, second, why is it gays are so quick to make a big deal about somthing this insignificant… hell ill say it fucking fag fucking fag fucking fag….sue me sheeesh. Go kobe we all know your a good person piss on these weirdos

cliveohclive April 13, 2011 at 9:23 pm

Why are those black folks so sensitive when they get called N*gg**? They all need to get over themselves. Shit!

Joe April 13, 2011 at 11:52 pm

Exactly imagine the uproar If a white player called a black ref a "fucking nigger!"

chocolatebear April 14, 2011 at 6:09 am

See….this is where you have got it all wrong. While it may suck that Kobe chose to call the ref the f word he did not use the term BECAUSE the ref is gay. He used it because he thought the ref was being an a-hole.

But when a white person calls a black person the n word — they are doing expressly and precisely because that black person is black!!!

Believe me, it's happened to me MANY times.

So your comparison –and totally unoriginal — might SOUND good, it actually has no merit whatsoever.

These are NOT comparable issues.

Christopher T. Palmer April 15, 2011 at 12:50 pm

What you don't seem to get is that someone uses the "N" word because they have no respect for black people in general. They may use it in a targeted manner in the moment, but their prejudice runs far deeper than the person they are using it on. When someone uses the word "fag" as a pejorative, whether they think the target is gay or not, what they are saying is that they have no respect for homosexuals as people. Again, their prejudice runs far deeper. This has nothing at all to do with the ref's sexual preference and everything to do with Kobe's public display of his prejudice.

NICOLA April 16, 2011 at 1:08 pm

I am a white girl first off. I completely agree with chocolate bear! When any race calls a lighter skinned person whther or not in heat of moment, pissed off at them directly, whatever it may be, (NIGGER – MEANS STUPID!) HOWEVER, NO ONE EVER CALLS ANYONE OF SUCH THAT WOULD! You always say stupid, dumbass, retatrd, and etc…….
IT IS NOT THAT BLACK PEOPLE NEED TO GET OVER THEMSELVES!!! I STRONGLY FEEL EVERY RACE NEEDS TO GET OVER THEIR LABELRING!!! YOU BE THE PERSON YOU WANT TO BE NO MATTER WHAT!!!

Jay April 16, 2011 at 8:59 pm

I am African American and agree with your statement. You're absolutely right. The comment was totally uncalled for and unacceptable.

caz April 14, 2011 at 5:26 am

so if a player calls a ref a fucking nigger because he's frustrated, that's ok?

77seemer April 16, 2011 at 7:17 am

yeah I guess if its in the" heat of the moment"… what a double standard

Jay April 16, 2011 at 9:03 pm

Maybe you should be your analogy to n-word more public and email kobe with your comment. He might be a little less about trivializing his inexcusable remarks.

micheal April 13, 2011 at 8:32 pm

It would have been a lot smarter to let it go , now everyone wants to say" fuckin fag".

Why don't these gays ignore this silly stuff they would be a lot better off.

77seemer April 16, 2011 at 7:28 am

These gays? like there are only a few ? what if we had said why are these blacks wanting rights? back in the 1960s? what if they said " straight people were all wack" and you were the one being disrespected? when they came for the jews no one spoke… when they came for the catholics no one spoke… when they came for me… no one spoke funny huh? You could be the next one so speak up for your fellow man and never accept the disrespect of others cause YOU could be next..EVERYONE deserves Respect and dignity..

Lyndsay May 12, 2011 at 10:58 am

If only closed minds came with closed mouths. But I have the feeling you would be ever silent.

me and you April 13, 2011 at 10:23 pm

so if Kobe called the ref an ASSHOLE, what should he do? apologize to the human race because we all have buttholes?

Vurban April 13, 2011 at 11:20 pm

The difference between calling someone an 'asshole' and calling them a 'fag' is that the former doesn't insult an entire group of people.
Think before opening your mouth, dumbfuck.

perezti April 13, 2011 at 11:37 pm

that negates humans as a group.

me and you April 14, 2011 at 1:01 am

yes, 'fag' insults some gay folks, 'assholes' insults all humans, think about it numbduck! open ur mind a lil

NICOLA April 16, 2011 at 1:12 pm

LMAO!

Lyndsay May 12, 2011 at 11:00 am

The difference is that if he calls someone a homophobic remark he insults the entire LGBT community and all of their straight allies. If he calls someone else and a$$Hole the only one he would have to apologise to is YOU and all the other narrow minded bigots.

perezti April 13, 2011 at 11:21 pm

I'm gay, and I think the "community" is being overlysensitive. Moreover, if a sportsperson saying an anit-gay slur is all we have to worry about, we're just falling behind politically.

MattAlgren April 13, 2011 at 11:37 pm

You do realize that we can react to a role model for youth shouting an anti-gay slur and do other things at the same time, right?

It's not even that hard.

David Badash April 14, 2011 at 12:14 am

Thanks, Matt. Exactly. That "zero-sum" thinking is the core of modern-day conservatism.

Caroline April 14, 2011 at 12:16 am

Too much correctness is being expected these days. Maybe it is good in some ways to make people aware that words can be hurtful to whomever they refer to, but really for the gay community to be so upset is over the top. ( even if reading lips?) If it is a conditioning moment for us all to be aware of unfair beliefs, I'll accept it and that is okay with me and think that learning is not such a bad thing.

David Badash April 16, 2011 at 11:43 am

In case you hadn't noticed, or ever opened a history book, civility is on a huge decline. And, obviously, you haven't considered the effect of this on children.

La'Quasha April 14, 2011 at 1:05 am

That's what you get can't take the heat can ya how does it feel how does it feel Kobe. Oh yea watch that slick mouth

Dan the Man April 14, 2011 at 1:43 am

La'Quasha, shut the hell up!

Hector April 14, 2011 at 10:53 am

I'm gay and…who really cares what Kobe said? I'm sure a lot gets said in that same vein during games, the camera just isn't on it. this is NON – NEWS, folks.

machoman April 16, 2011 at 9:07 pm

I'm just made because Kobe won't fuck me.

Concerned April 16, 2011 at 6:07 am

He just shouldn't be throwing insults around fullstop. It has become all too common in sports and as these people end up as role models for our children we should all try to do something to stop it.

Steve April 16, 2011 at 8:43 pm

God made men to go with women

Elaine April 17, 2011 at 7:16 pm

In general, no one should be insulting anyone – period. Have some manners and respect for other people, races, religions, etc. Those who are 'role models' in any way (parents, sports starts, movie stars, etc) have an opportunity to present to the rest of the world either a positive example or not. It would seem to be in their best interests, and the interests of those who look up to them, to have some manners.

I think it is very sad that humans in general feel the need to be judgmental, disrespectful and rude – and they pass that behavior on to their children. When do we remember what respect, manners and common courtesy is?? It isn't about religion and it isn't about race and it isn't about sexuality. It is simply about being kind and compassionate and respectful…it isn't that hard… Treat others as you would have others treat you…

MyohoMama April 19, 2011 at 1:58 pm

Elaine, well said! It is about being kind and compassionate. We are loosing sight of that. We need to promote that mindset. What we say in anger is what is in our hearts. We need to think before we speak, or we need to say nothing if we are so angry that naything comes out of our mouths.

jose April 17, 2011 at 8:36 pm

people lets just move on.jose

cliveohclive April 21, 2011 at 7:40 pm

77seemer April 16, 2011 at 7:19 am

Baby i was born this way and thats ok!! its all good!! expand your narrow mind!!

77semmer April 16, 2011 at 7:10 am

I bet he wouldn't like to be called a dumb nigger…. so his faggot comment is just unprofessional and typical of MBA behavior

77seemer April 16, 2011 at 7:15 am

You are correct Kobe is a total asshole and should be Dropped from ever playing again. 100,000 fine? and hes appealing? what a joke

cliveohclive April 21, 2011 at 8:10 pm

Absolutely agree. And therefore, I find it disheartening when someone diminishes the impact of the use of demeaning terms in reference to homosexuals. Frankly, there are many people who believe that they have the license to use these terms when they would never consider similar pejoratives in reference to black people.

I am personally disheartened by this event.

NICOLA April 16, 2011 at 1:09 pm
