Oprah interviewed Jason Russell and asked, “There were all these other rumors that you were gay.” Jason Russell, the creator of the viral video campaign KONY 2012 who disappeared after he was found running around into the streets naked and possibly masturbating. Russell’s response was twofold: “I’ve heard those rumors,” and, “I’m theatrical.”

And let’s be clear: there was no outright denial.

Russell, who created the Invisible Children foundation has come under much scrutiny, accused also of inappropriate use of the donations his charity received, but perhaps the most damning event occurred when Russell was caught on tape calling his organization a “Trojan Horse” that will allow him to enter the secular world and introduce Christian fundamentalism, according to a report published by Truth Wins Out founder Wayne Besen.

One has to wonder if Mr Russell coming out in the public sphere once again has more to do with trying to sweep away the embarrassing incident and to attempt to rebuild his reputation as a credible film maker as opposed to a nutcracker. But then again how are we as audience members suppose to reflect on the nature of his films if he the director disavows a reflection of his own nature and pretends it was all just a moment that went awry.
