NOM To The Faithful: Give Us Money Or ‘Gay Marriage Will Be Imposed Across America’

Brian Brown, president of NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, yesterday sent yet another fear-mongering fundraising email threatening that if “people of faith” don’t donate to NOM, “gay ‘marriage’ will be imposed as the law of the land for all of us.”

Apparently, the anti-marriage equality movement isn’t doing very well. Perhaps President Obama’s support of same-sex marriage in May threw a wrench in NOM’s works. Perhaps the consistent federal court case decisions in favor of marriage equality are causing trouble over at Anti-Gay HQ. Or perhaps NOM and other anti-gay organizations are just accepting the fact that every single major national poll over the past two years has found that the majority or plurality of Americans support the right of same-sex couples to marry.

Regardless, clearly Brian Brown is nervous.

“I need to update you with some distressing news. As I write this update from Tampa, in preparation for the 2012 GOP convention, it appears our fight to defend marriage this fall will be even tougher than we anticipated,” Brown whines. Which is rather amusing, since just one day before, Brown was strutting around like a peacock, all proud of himself for how he mistreated Dan Savage and Dan’s family while a guest in Dan’s home.

Here’s (literally!) the money quote from Brian Brown’s email yesterday:

Bottom line: if people of faith don’t immediately stand up to match the homosexual lobby’s money, gay “marriage” will be imposed as the law of the land for all of us. We can win this fight but not unless Christians and marriage supporters step up their contributions right now.

So please read my email below to support our action plan with an immediate contribution. I’m counting on your urgently needed support as this fight is bigger than even we originally thought.

Did you read that right?

Brian Brown says that “if people of faith don’t immediately stand up to match the homosexual lobby’s money, gay ‘marriage’ will be imposed as the law of the land for all of us.”

(Gotta love that “homosexual lobby” anti-gay rhetoric! Not to mention, fear-monger much?)

It’s very clear, ever since Maggie Gallagher divorced herself from the National Organization For Marriage, that the NOM leadership has taken a huge turn right, and landed in the gutter. It isn’t pretty, but that’s where Brian Brown and his boss, John Eastman, apparently are the most-comfortable.

Gone are Maggie’s attempts to frame the marriage “debate” as an intelligent exercise. In its place, sheer and utter ugly hate speech and attempts to appeal to the most base instincts of their base of non-cognitive, non-elites.

Yes, by all means, people of faith (the vast majority of whom, by the way, support same-sex marriage!), please, donate to NOM. Throw your money to the wind.

Would that that were true. Gay Marriage across America — if only!

This is typical fundraising speak and I wouldn't read quite so much into it. You'll find this style in just about any fundraising letter you receive if fundraising professionals are involved. I could easily turn this into a fundraising letter for just about any cause. I worked in direct marketing fundraising for over nine years, and this is easily recognizable. It's very formulaic, from the call-out quote above the salutation (known as a Johnson box), to the P.S., it's all the same crap, just the details are changed..

I don't mean this as a defense of NOM, and I do understand that most people don't necessarily recognize it for what it is, it's just not particularly alarming or unusual given the main purpose of the email.

Unfortunately for the LGBT rights movement, NOM and FRC have been handed a powerful weapon in their fundraising efforts against us: 2 lawsuits, one by a Lesbian couple against an Inn in Vermont, and one by a Lesbian couple vs. a photographer in New Mexico. The photographer and the Innkeepers opposed marriage equality, and therefore were sued for not accomodating same sex ceremonies. It is one thing to argue that we deserve the right to get married just like everyone else. It is truly another to sue someone because they do not want to participate in a same sex ceremony for religious reasons. Shockingly, the courts found with the plaintiffs. Even more amazing to me, the ACLU supported the Lesbian couple in the Vermont case. Now all the horror stories that the right has been using to scare people into opposing same sex marriage are coming true, namely, that religious freedom is being trampled on in the name of LGBT rights. This is without a doubt a catastrophe for our movement. If we are to ever achieve equal rights, it will not be done by suing conscientious objectors. These two cases are all over the right-wing's chat rooms, and for good reason. If this stuff takes over the national headlines, we are doomed!!!

This is an old trick dreamed up by a fellow traveler, the fundamentalist TV preacher Oral (some said Anal) Roberts. When his college building fund was lagging in shekel contributions, he went on the air and wept, saying God had told him he would die soon without his work on earth ever having been completed. (Actually, it was his ego that had not be assuaged properly.) The contributions flooded in, God never having met a sucker He gave an even break, and Lord knows they are born ever minute. Nothing new here. They learned it from the preachers.

shevmonster: I think you have caught glimpse of the larger objectives of the gender left, which extend far beyond the imposition of same sex marriage.

All of the larger issues involve an assault on constitutional liberty itself, which is why every homosexual ought to seriously consider whether they are being cynically employed here, as a means of securing a legal basis upon which to destroy religious and other civil liberties which impede and inconvenience the imposition of the Brave New World of the radical gender left.

A great many of the votes which passed Prop 8 in California came from homosexuals who saw where this was heading.

They got the idea from Oral Roberts, who told his TV audience God warned he'd die unless followers sent shekels to build the university he was planning. It worked. There's a sucker born every minute.

I love gay marrage to be forced on everyone. I want to marry a young gay dude (A Twink 18 to 20 years old) I am 29 years old. Being gay is going to be so much fun. Also I would love to travel the us and around the world where gays are accepted . I am a satan worshipper. I hate my parents and my family so much. I want to sell my soul to be a billionaire.
