National Organization For Marriage (NOM) president Brian Brown today, in one of his many fundraising emails to supporters, stated, “We’re not going to allow gay activists to get away with attempted murder,” and “we must also fight back against the violent and hateful tactics of intimidation being pursued every day by gay ‘marriage’ thugs and activists.” Brown was referring to last week’s shooting at Family Research Council headquarters, and attempted to widely paint all LGBT activists and supporters wide an offensively wide brush.

“Five days ago, a gay activist stormed the offices of the Family Research Council (FRC), a pro-marriage ally in our fight, attempted to barge into their offices with a loaded weapon, and when confronted by a security officer, tried to murder the guard and thereby intimidate Christians and marriage supporters everywhere,” Brown’s email begins.

“The armed gay activist was reportedly carrying a large cache of ammunition and bags of food from Chick-Fil-A,” Brown continues, fear-mongering:

They will do whatever it takes to intimidate Christians and marriage supporters including harassing people at home and work.

The National Organization for Marriage is fighting back to defend marriage from gay activist bullies but I need your immediate contribution of $50, $100, or as much as you can give right now to fight back.

The attempted murder by the gay activist occurred just one day after the so-called Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest and wealthiest homosexual lobby, publicly branded the FRC a “hate group.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center, a once-proud civil rights group that is now nothing more than a hard-left attack machine, has also tagged the FRC with this epithet, and they’ve threatened to do so with NOM as well. Our hateful crime? Opposing homosexual “marriage.”

And there’s a “P.S.” as usual:

We’re not going to allow gay activists to get away with attempted murder. And we’re not going to shut up so they can go about the business of redefining marriage. We’re going to fight, and we’re going to win. But we can only do this if you stand with us today. That’s why we need your immediate contribution of $50, $100, or as much as you can give right now to fight back for marriage.

Jeremy Hooper at Good As You writes:

He is seriously laying the attempted act of one crazed person at the feet of me, you, and anyone who debates on the side of civil marriage equality. That is not an overstatement. Brian Brown, National Organization For Marriage president (i.e. the man leading all four state ballot fights), just said “We’re not going to allow gay activists to get away with attempted murder!” as if that is what “gay activists™” want/seek. His attempted conflation is as obvious as it is dangerous and it is outrageous!

And adds:

Oh, and by the way Brian—virtually every LGBT activist I know is either fine with or insistent that Floyd Corkins’ act of violence be investigated as a hate crime! Remember, we are the ones who argued in favor of bias-motivated crimes being investigated for what they are. FRC is the organization that vehemently opposed the idea!

Calling people fighting for equality “gay ‘marriage’ thugs and activists,” is wrong and ugly and low. Claiming we all use “violent and hateful tactics of intimidation” “every day” is a lie — one Brown knows all too well.

That's disgusting. I'd say Brown should be ashamed, but obviously he doesn't understand the concept. I just take this as a sign that they are conceding that they can no longer demonize us by exaggerating our sexualities – they must now paint us as a violent people. Yeah… this is nothing like the fight for black civil rights at all…..

On a side note, have you heard that this usage of "thug" may be becoming the new veiled slur of choice of republicans and teabaggers? My former roommate is both, as well as an avid consumer of right-wing radio and blogs. Earlier this summer he snapped, assaulted my husband and called him a "faggot." We contacted police, and shorty thereafter he started saying "thug" a lot. He must have realized that the other kind of language could get him in trouble with his job. (He ironically works at the famously anti-gay gay bar, The Abbey.) Suddenly he started using the word "thugs" all of the time to refer to us in his rants, as in the "West Hollywood Thugs" (meaning us and our friends) were trying to spread rumors and ruin his reputation. (We neither live, work, nor play in WeHo.) At first I thought it was just bad usage of the word by a psychopath, but then I started to notice the word being used more and more in anti-LGBT propaganda. Could this be a subliminal stimulus they are using to train people to use language that will keep their bigotry hidden from view, much like the various racist euphemisms Southern whites have developed?

The ReTHUGlicans (sorry) are really good at framing and semantics. They always get the best words first. So I suspect that the memo came down for everyone to use the word "thug" when referring to people simply trying to regain some civil rights. It's a wonderful 4 letter word, it has the harsh resonance of "fuck", and it's easy for people with lobotomies to remember. A win-win all around, I'd say….

I hadn't realized anyone was murdered. Poor Brian, he's confusing his imaginary friend in heaven with real life again.
