Using the famous movie “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof” as a metaphor, Oral Roberts’ gay grandson, Randy Potts Roberts, discusses life growing up in his evangelical family, his gay uncle who died by suicide, and says in his mid-twenties he realized he was gay, and came out, despite the fact he was married.
Randy Potts Roberts, guest minister on Sunday, July 17, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, discusses his grandfather’s famous plea for eight million dollars, calls his grandfather, the famous Oral Roberts, the pioneer televangelist, a liar.
Despite this statement, despite the fact that Oral Roberts was one of the greatest homophobes this country has known, Randy Potts Roberts finds ways to speak lovingly of his home life. Regardless of your faith, or lack thereof, it’s a fascinating and heartwarming speech.
Be sure to watch Randy Potts Roberts’ It Gets Better video.
“Tulsa, Oklahoma is ground zero for the American Pentecostal Charismatic Christian (Fundamentalist) movement and most definitely Oral Roberts country so the importance of the grandson of Oral Roberts, Randy Roberts Potts, speaking out on this subject can not be understated,” wrote Timothy Beauchamp at Americablog Gay.

This young man must have been adopted because he's much too attractive to have spewed forth from the likes of Oral. Either that or the young man has all of Oral's recessive genes.
Wow! He can be my assistant Youth Minister any day. What charisma! Randy is exactly the type of person young people need today to counsel and guide them. Of course, we knew Grandpa Roberts was a liar years ago, but even the truth has an ugly head for the conservative mindframe.

Apparently they have collapsed all replies to Ken Silva's comment. So, now I'm the asshole? Even though YOU were the one that said the following to me, "May you contract non-curable cancer, without the aid of a known painkiller that works, and never die. Maybe then you'll have something to whine about!" Yeah, I'm a "non-Christian" asshole!
You know what, I don't wish harm to come of anyone, INCLUDING my biggest enemies. Yes, and I'm the "non-christian" asshole! Guess what! I act more like a REAL christian than you EVER will!
Your reply contradicts itself, IndieVoter… however… these internet blogs have absolutely gotten out of control… of that I'm aware. I didn't used to be as bad as I've become but the rightwing bloggers seem to have been a bit too successful in turning me to the dark side also. Sooooooo… I apologize to you, IndieVoter, and to others here. This commenting has become so much a part of my makeup that it has jeopardized my outlook on life. I need to regroup.
Apology accepted. Please accept my apology. I am far from a right-winger though. Just to explain a little bit, when I was referring to Silva's BS and tripe, I wasn't referring to his religious beliefs by any means. I was referring to his attacks on Randy Potts Roberts. I personally don't care what someone else believes, until I see them attacking someone else. That is when I speak up.
This is my objective also. Maybe… just maybe… we can each do something wherever we go from here to try and change the mood for others. It tain't easy! . (I think you're a good man!)
There is more going on as well in this with Potts: http://tiny.cc/gwow8
The "Calls Grandfather "Liar" part of your title for this entry really is misleading and demeaning, and it really doesn't do justice to the remarkable grace and depth in this sermon. It is absolutely first class and I'm very glad you posted it.
What's really sad is if we hadn't titled it like that chances are you wouldn't have clicked to read it.
May you contract non-curable cancer, without the aid of a known painkiller that works, and never die. Maybe then you'll have something to whine about!
Wow, is that the best you've got? Seriously? Wishing a long painful death upon someone? How very "Christian" of you!
Was I talking to you? NO! Did you even bother to read the bullshit that Mr. Silva posted? He attacked Mr. Roberts! Yet you wish a long painful death on me!
Perhaps your wish will come true. And of course, just like the good "Christian" that you are, you will revel in the fact that you told me to get an non-curable cancer for which painkillers won't help me cope! Again, how Christian of you! What is really sad, is that YOUR brand of Christianity, you know the one that wishes long painful deaths for those who don't subscribe to your tripe. Such WONDERFUL behavior from a so-called "Pastor!"
And here I thought, you were one of the "good guys." Guess I was wrong!
Ohhhhhhhh, you were way wrong!!! I apologize…I forgot you! (Actually, I am against all non-christian assholes like you… you just got in my way too late!!! Try again!
I know exactly where Mr. Silva was coming from… you just got in the way!
I think you're a good man as well.
