Pat Robertson today on his 700 Club show called people who are not Christian a “virus.” The 81-year old televangelist, who yesterday blessed oral sex as long as it is within a God-recognized (read: not same-sex) marriage, added that Islam is one of “these false religions” that can kill a healthy system like Christianity. Also, Robertson falsely claimed that “our elites have turned against the founding principles that gave us our freedom. Why? Because they don’t want to be Christian.”

For the record, Robertson is wrong on all counts. At what point does his opinion get labeled hate speech?

Brian Tashman at Right Wing Watch points to this infamous quote of Robertson’s from 1986:

“It is interesting, that termites don’t build things, and the great builders of our nation almost to a man have been Christians, because Christians have the desire to build something. He is motivated by love of man and God, so he builds. The people who have come into [our] institutions [today] are primarily termites. They are into destroying institutions that have been built by Christians, whether it is universities, governments, our own traditions, that we have…. The termites are in charge now, and that is not the way it ought to be, and the time has arrived for a godly fumigation.”

He also offers this video and transcript:

Robertson: It’s like a virus, if you have, we have, all of us have, antibodies in our system and if our system is healthy we can repel viruses, but once those antibodies breakdown then the viruses take over. The antibody to these false religions have been vibrant Christianity, it doesn’t exist any longer in Belgium, it doesn’t exist in Europe any longer.

Meeuwsen: It seems as though we are so busy enjoying the benefits and the blessings that God has given us that it’s like we’ve gone to sleep.

Robertson: We’ve not only gone to sleep, we’ve actively attacked it. We’ve attacked the founding principle of our civilization and no one can do that and survive, but that’s what happened. Our elites have turned against the founding principles that gave us our freedom. Why? Because they don’t want be Christian, they don’t want to acknowledge that they are sinners, they don’t want to come and say they need a Savior, that’s humbling, they want to be proud and in their pride they are going to lose everything.

Like Hitler … this man is a virus. We made demands that Rush Limbaugh's rantings of sluts was the straw that broke the camel's back. We stood together and demanded to pull his show from airtime. This man no more than Limbaugh should receive airtime for his hate mongering rhetoric.

This is just a new low for him. The "Godly fumigation" quote from twenty-five years back shows this man is a danger to western civilization. Why does hatred get a free pass when it's wrapped under the disguise of "religious liberty?"

Ah, Godwin's Law makes an appearance. I'm surprised it took so long.
This man is not like Hitler. Hitler murdered, tortured, and destroyed the lives of countless human beings. This man is stating an opinion on a television show that you don't have to watch.
Having hatred, and expressing it, falls under the right to freedom of speech. As much as you might not like it, he has a right to say these things to whomever will listen. So long as it is not directly calling someone into illegal action, he can say pretty much whatever he wants. But the wonderful thing about that is that you can ignore him. Completely.

I don't recall anyone dying or being sick from this "virus" because they're not Christian. What bullshit.
