After three U.S. states voted to extend the institution of marriage to same-sex couples, and a fourth refused to enshrine a ban into its constitution, and on the footsteps of Spain upholding its same-sex marriage laws and France pushing forward with theirs, the Vatican escalated Pope Benedict XVI‘s international anti-gay marriage holy war.

“In a front-page article in Saturday’s Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, the Holy See sought to frame itself as the lone voice of courage in opposing initiatives to give same-sex couples legal recognition,” the AP reported in The Huffington Post:

In a separate Vatican Radio editorial, the pope’s spokesman asked sarcastically why gay marriage proponents don’t now push for legal recognition for polygamous couples as well.

Catholic teaching holds that homosexuals should be respected and treated with dignity but that homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered.” The Vatican also opposes same-sex marriage, insisting on the sanctity of marriage between a man and woman as the foundation for society.

The AP adds:

The article insisted that Catholics were putting up a valiant fight to uphold church teaching in the face of “politically correct ideologies invading every culture of the world” that are backed by institutions like the United Nations, which last year passed a non-binding resolution condemning anti-gay discrimination.

“The church is called to present itself as the lone critic of modernity, the only check … to the breakup of the anthropological structures on which human society was founded,” it said.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi, for his part, said gays can have their rights protected by means other than through legal marital recognition. He stressed that children should have a right to say they have a father and a mother.

“If not, then why not contemplate freely chosen polygamy, and naturally so as to not discriminate, polyandry?” he asked sarcastically. Polyandry is when a woman has two or more husbands.

Noting “what’s most laughably ridiculous about the Vatican’s latest outburst against LGBT rights is that it just can’t let go of one of the oldest, dumbest arguments against them in the world,” Salon’s Mary Elizabeth Williams has a few thoughts for Pope Benedict:

To those who think a loving union between two people is like having a compound full of sister wives or whatever, let me humbly suggest you dial it down a bit. As Andrew Sullivan long ago pleaded, ”Spare us this bizarre point that no new line can be drawn in access to marriage — or else everything is up for grabsand, before we know where we are, men will be marrying their dogs. It is intellectually laughable.” In a Washington Post essay last month, Emory University religion and law scholar John Witte Jr. explained — using evidence and science! — that nature suggests polygamous arrangements produce “rivalry and discord in the home,” in which “children have to work hard to get attention, affection and resources which are dissipated.” He added, “Women and children of modern polygamy are often poorly educated, impoverished, and chronically dependent on welfare.” Polygamy produces scarcity and competition. Same-sex relationships don’t. Maybe that’s why there’s no huge polygamy pride parade every June.

Nobody expects the Catholic Church, with its long-standing history of fear and animosity toward gays, as well as its sneaky track record of blaming them for its own most despicable crimes, to go all rainbow flag in the imminent future. Opening hearts and changing old norms is going to take a whole lot of time and incredible effort. But it’s encouraging that here in the U.S., it was Catholics who helped push Barack Obama toward victory last week, defeating Mitt Romney by 50 to 47 percent. Catholics who believe in marriage equality – oh, and the reproductive rights of our fellow citizens.

So while here at home bishops may rail “against all forms of its weakening” matrimony, and back at the Vatican they may try to instill fear that equal rights will lead to an outbreak of harems, those of us here in the land called Reality aren’t sweating it. Frankly, if you’re looking for a reason for opposing marriage equality and the basic rights and dignity of your fellow humans, you might as well just stick with, “I don’t know, it just makes me feel icky, I guess.” Same-sex marriage doesn’t lead to polygamy. And, guess what? It doesn’t erode hetero unions either. And if you want to suggest otherwise, by all means, look up from your lazy reasoning and just try to prove it.

I am interested in this paragraph, "The article insisted that Catholics were putting up a valiant fight to uphold church teaching in the face of “politically correct ideologies invading every culture of the world” that are backed by institutions like the United Nations, which last year passed a non-binding resolution condemning anti-gay discrimination." I have puzzled over the phrase "politically correct" since it was first coined and used against the National Endowment for the Arts some 20 years ago. What's wrong with being politically correct? What is wrong with being correct about anything? It seems the phrase is a de facto acknowledgement that those to whom one is opposed to are actually the ones with the correct answer. If the UN, and so many governments can see that this is a civil rights and a justice issue and the Roman Catholic church acknowledges that this view is "correct," then what is the problem? The problem is that the doctrine held by the RC church and many other sects is (by their own admission) incorrect (both politically, logically and theologically.) Time to adjust the doctrines and get on with it. It's been done before — you can do it again.

When will the Vatican acknowledge that it demonized WWII-era homosexuals and got them deported to concentration camps?

"Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi, for his part, said gays can have their rights protected by means other than through legal marital recognition. He stressed that children should have a right to say they have a father and a mother."

So why isn't the Vatican pushing for equal rights for gays? Why isn't the National Organization for Marriage (or any other anti-gay organization) pushing for equal rights for gays? That's the last thing on their mind. It's just their pathetic fall-back position when they realize that they're losing.

As for children saying that they have a mother and father, who's stopping them? If children are being brought up by opposite-sex parents, they can call them mom and dad as much as they want. As for same-sex couples that adopt children, those kids didn't have ANY parents. So basically the Vatican is saying that children should be homeless as opposed to having two parents that happen to be gay. How Christian of them.

The Catholic Church must be so proud. What a worthwhile cause from the defenders and protectors of institutional pedophilia. They are on an international mission to make life Hell for gay people.

Sorry, but why are we bestowing any credibility on the people who perpetrated the Inquisition….who were silent in the face of the Holocaust….who to this day in Africa, help to kill countless more 'heterosexuals' from AIDS, because they discourage the distribution of condoms? The Church has no moral authority on anything.

I will take it one step further. The Roman Catholic church, and their leader, the Hitler youth Pope, are all about maintaining power and influence, controlling others, and the acquisition of money. End of story.

They are the last people that should be holding forth on what is moral.

The war against gay marriage is one that the Catholic church is, without question, going to lose. And I find it disgusting that with all the poverty and disease wracking the world that they could be helping to alleviate, that they fixate on gay marriage.

On another note, I really hate it when polygamy or polyamorous relationships are demonized. And I really hate it that people only use religious extremist compounds where 12-13yr old girls are married off to 50yr old men as examples of polygamy. This isn't a healthy relationship by any definition- it's institutionalized rape and religious extortion.

There are consenting adults out there in small, healthy, loving poly relationships that would get married if allowed. But because the general public can not differentiate between these relationships and the other, all poly relationships are deemed "bad" and "taboo".

My favorite phrase to use when dealing with religious ideology being applied to social issues is that my morality is not your morality. Just because modern Judeo-Christian adherents believe that polygamy/polyandry is wrong and evil does not make it so for everyone.

As a disclaimer, I classify myself as a polyamorous person by nature and a monogamous one by choice.

"insisting on the sanctity of marriage between a man and woman as the foundation for society" tell that to the EVER increasing number of "Straight" couples that get divorces, and it comes back as an oxymoron!

“politically correct ideologies invading every culture of the world” that are backed by institutions like the United Nations, which last year passed a non-binding resolution condemning anti-gay discrimination" CORRECT is CORRECT no matter how you say it….And discrimination to ANYONE is WRONG!

The Catholic Church needs to open it's heart and it's mind!!! Be part of the 21st century instead of living in the DARK AGES! And… REALLY? a NAZI pope?….you must be CRAZY!!!

1) When the Pope's opinion matters, I will email him for it. Since I do not want laws made based on the Bible (either the Protestant or the Catholic versions) his religious viewpoint carries no quite as much weight as the Rev Billy Graham. Rev Graham is a US citizen and the Pope isn't.

2) I promise I will keep my views on Vatican City law to myself, if he keeps his views on US laws to himself.

3) Since the Vatican harbors convicted US felons, child-abusers convicted legitimately in as US citizens in US courts, he is has no regard for our laws (or children) so his views on anything mean NOTHING.

"Polygamy produces scarcity and competition. Same-sex relationships don’t. Maybe that’s why there’s no huge polygamy pride parade every June.". This is so incredibly humourous! Polygamy spreads the wealth. Many households do fine having multiple parents raise a kid (normally the child gets many extra possessions). further, THERE IS NO HUGE "POLYGAMY PARADE" because IT IS ILLEGAL, CRIMINALLY PROSECUTED TO BE A POLYGAMIST!! Get it?!

How amazing to be so self-rigtheous in defining what is "consensual relations" and what is not: based on whose moral interpretation!?! Either people have to choose who they want to be with: or they don't.

What morality do you have to say it is only two? These are ADULTS consenting. The point is: you are discriminating or you are not. Marriage is kept traditional, or ALL GROUPS EQUALLY DISCIMINATED are protected.

Quit focusing on the Vatican and focus back on the issue: redefining marriage on the grounds of "civil rights", yet claiming some exclusive morality that others are being denied.

The Catholic church and the Pope need a big tall glass of shut the hell up! Who cares what you think? You should worry about your priests molesting children and get out of our lives, it is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS! If we ask to get married in a Catholic church then we will talk until then, MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS and protect the children.

One knwo they are scraping the bottom of the barrel of insanity when they blame the kids for being raped. This btw is similar to how they get fixed gays to blame eg Matthew Shepard murder (wy – 1998) for his murder, by two catholic kids)

Insanity rules. in the VAT. BTW want another 9-11? the pope's cardianls want to get the Muslims to " protect Marriage" (ps the rothodox Jews are really torah thumper extremists. Reform and Cosnervative Judaism do gay marriage ceremonies)
