Even in this, the day of the GOP and Conservative spin machines masked as news networks, and working full time to distort the truth and broadcast outright lies, it’s still surprising to learn that television stations would broadcast content created by partisan or secular interests. But it’s even more surprising to see that in the space of one hour a television station would recognize its mistake and remove from their schedule an hour-long program that spewed hate and lies.
Grand Rapids, Michigan NBC affiliate WOOD-TV acquiesced to a Human Rights Campaign action and pulled ”Speechless: Silencing The Christians” from their schedule. From the HRC:
“This program promotes an atmosphere of intolerance and hatred against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people that has no place on our public airwaves.
What’s more, it promotes outright lies about LGBT equality – for example, that hate crime laws will “do away with our freedom of speech,” when the proposed federal hate crimes law explicitly states that it only applies to violent acts, not speech.”
The video, produced by the American Family Association, is hosted by christian conservative radio host Janet Parshall, who, in 2006, suggested Matthew Shepard’s lifestyle was responsible for his murder. The AFA describes itself as being “for people who are tired of cursing the darkness and who are ready to light a bonfire.”
This is an excellent example of the success the gay rights movement is making in our fight for equal rights and fair treatment. But for every success there are countless atrocities being committed against the gay community.
Right now the religious right is fighting very hard to turn back the clock and suppress the advances we have made. A Democratic majority in Congress and a Democratic president have convinced them to come out of the woodwork. Nothing breeds hate more than failure.
