"Critical Mass" — Is Gay Republican The New Black?

Steele vs. Dawson, Round Two? (Dawson Is Worse)

After a public battle with Rush Limbaugh, GOP Chairman Michael Steele‘s job may be in jeopardy. After his backpeddling on his “big tent” claim to include members of the gay community, and an overall disasterous two months in office, South Carolina GOP leader Katon Dawson, who lost the chair vote to Steele, may become Steele’s replacement. While Steele’s LGBT record is atrocious, Dawson’s is worse.

Right Wing Watch reported last year Dawson saying he wanted the GOP to,

“renew our commitment to our Party’s timeless principles…by reconfirming our commitment to be the party of smaller government, lower taxes, individual freedom, strong national security, respect for the sanctity of life, traditional marriage, the importance of family and the exceptionalism of America.”

And there you have it folks. The only ones making headway in the Republican party are the extreme right-wingers. The GOP will do what it always does, retreat to its more conservative roots. And the Conservatives do not like Steele. Regardless of Steele’s public image problem, he has a greater one:

“Michael’s biggest problem, obviously, during the chairmanship race, was, did he have the management skills, the leadership skills, to do the job?” said a member of Steele’s transition team. “People are starting to say, ‘Aha, he wasn’t ready.’

“Personally, I wouldn’t have left my office until I had a chief of staff. He’s sitting here, five weeks later, with no chief of staff, no finance chairman, no political director, no national finance director, no legal counsel.”

So, it’s not looking good for Steele. Regardless of who leads the GOP, the fight for our rights continues. Steele or Dawson, Dawson’s worse. But we are stronger and will win the fight. But as I’ve said before,

“It is all in flux right now. Today. And whether we win or lose is up to you. Yes, you. Remember that anger you had November 4th, November 5th, even January 5th? Well, it’s time to resurrect it. Because the fight is just beginning. And like it or not, you’re included.”
