The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts released this photo yesterday, following the wedding of Michael Kaiser and John Roberts, (no relation to the Chief Justice) which was presided over by Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
As the New Civil Rights Movement reported yesterday, Justice Ginsburg is believed to be the first of the high court’s justices to officiate at a same-sex wedding.
“Michael Kaiser is a friend and someone I much admire,” Ginsburg said of her participation. “That is why I am officiating at his wedding.”
Michael Kaiser is the President of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where the wedding was held. Justice Ginsburg, who is an opera buff, is a frequent visitor to the Kennedy Center.
“It’s very meaningful mostly to have a friend officiate, and then for someone of her stature, it’s a very big honor,” Kaiser told the Associated Press. “I think that everything that’s going on that makes same-sex marriage possible and visible helps to encourage others and to make the issue seem less of an issue, to make it just more part of life.”
Justice Ginsburg says she will officiate at another same-sex wedding this month, but gave no details.
