Post image for Watch: Andrew Sullivan Takes On Maggie Gallagher At The Cato Institute’s Conservative Debate

Is There a Place for Gay People in Conservatism and Conservative Politics?

As I wrote earlier this week, the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank (which boasts the likes of Tucker Carlson as a Senior Fellow,) this week held a conference titled, “Is There a Place for Gay People in Conservatism and Conservative Politics?”

The debate, which included Nick Herbert, MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Conservative Party, United Kingdom; Andrew Sullivan, The Daily Dish Blog, The Atlantic; and Maggie Gallagher, President, National Organization for Marriage, was very interesting.

Whether you’re a liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican, or of any other affiliation — or none — you’ll find the ideas professed by Nick Herbert interesting and inspiring. I’m not a conservative by any means, but the way he describes the way the LGBTQ community is perceived and treated in the U.K. makes me envious.

I wrote when I posted the audio of the debate,

“It’s important to me to note the following. I believe true conservatives have a great deal of good in their minds and hearts. I also believe that the world they live in is not real. To be totally honest, in my youth I probably was a libertarian, without realizing it. But when I grew up, and lived in the real world, I saw what the world was doing to people — poor people, gay people, minorities, etc., and knew that it took laws and strong leadership to create a world that protects us from those who would do us harm.”

Andrew Sullivan, of whom I’m a great admirer, despite our political and religious differences, did a great job.

And then there’s Maggie Gallagher. I love Maggie. I truly do. Because she so steadfastly believes in her bigotry, she wields and displays it openly and proudly. It makes it so easy to expose her hate and bigotry.

You’ll see Maggie claim she knows many gay people who don’t believe in gay rights. She claims some of them work for her. I hope she is wrong. I can’t imagine any greater treasonous act to one’s community.

Conservatives See Court Case As Invitation To Further Bigotry Agenda
In his weekly newsletter (read: donation-shilling email) National Organization for Marriage Executive Director Brian Brown writes,
“The new Supreme Court decision in Citizens United…is giving us all a renewed measure of hope for our other legal cases. In Yes on 8 vs. Bowen, we are joining with [...]

Support The Military! Unless They Support Gays Serving In The Military

It’s rather ironic, if you think about it.
The one politically untouchable segment of our country is the military. Presidents and Senators often say they will “defer to the military leaders on the ground” in matters large and small. President Obama took a bit of heat after his State of the Union address because some felt [...]

If Money Is Speech, Anti-Gay Marriage D.C. Residents Were Mum

All politics may be local, but political donations are anything but. I’ve often wondered if he should be a law prohibiting out-of-state money in local politics. Of course, given the Supreme Court’s ridiculous decision in Citizen’s United, well, that will never happen.
So, let’s talk D.C.’s recent same-sex marriage campaign. If the good citizens of Washington, [...]

U.S. Government Study: Majority Of Abused Children Maltreated By Their Biological Parents — Not By Same-Sex Couples

Pope: Stop Granting Annulments. U.S. Worst Offender (Are You Listening, Maggie?)

It seems straight marriage really is under attack. This time, from the Church itself, which has had more annulment cases in the United States than in the rest of the world — combined. And so Pope Benedict XVI is chastising clerics and telling them to avoid granting the coveted church decisions “at all costs.”
One has [...]

Maggie Gallagher’s Strange Sense Of “Reality”

A few day ago, Maggie Gallagher, the founder and president of the National Organization for (Straights only) Marriage, filed this post on NOM’s blog:
“Trial Watch Update/Maggie Gallagher
This isn’t really a trial update. While David Blankenhorn is on the hand try to explain to David Boies the nature of marriage as a cross-cultural virtually universal [...]

That’s right. In their never-ending battle against same-sex marriage, the National Organization for Marriage has spent towards the campaign of Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown – the man who posed nude for Cosmo, and voted in favor of the Marriage Amendment in Massachusetts’ legislature – $50,000. Specifically, according to a NOM email sent today,
“That’s why NOM [...]

Is Maggie Gallagher Really This Myopic?

I just read – and re-read, just to be sure – Maggie Gallagher’s comments from Tuesday’s Prop 8 trial. Why is it that every time she opens her mouth – or her laptop – we just get another glimpse of her shallowness, her lack of understanding of the big picture, and her inability to see [...]

Change.org Takes A Broader Look At Marriage Equality’s “Inevitability”

Change.org Takes A Broader Look At Marriage Equality’s “Inevitability.”
Today, in “Same-Sex Marriage is Still Inevitable,” Michael A. Jones, a writer I respect immensely, looks at recent marriage equality news, including the “inevitability” meme that I examined in “Maggie Gallagher: Conservatives Have More Babies To Try To Destroy Inevitability Of Gay Marriage.” (Jones also comments on [...]
