Target Produces “It Gets Better” Video With (Almost) Only White People
Target used to be the store the LGBT community loved. Don’t ask me why — we didn’t have them growing up and still don’t now that I live in Manhattan. But as many know, for the past year Target has been attacked — rightfully so — by LGBT consumers for donating to PACs that support openly anti-gay candidates, and they have not handled the PR part of this nightmare well.
No one can say why Target decided to make an It Gets Better video. I’m glad they did. Overall, it’s good and the stories are beautiful. But for a company that is the second-largest discount retailer in the United States, operating 1750 stores in the U.S., with 355,000 employees, couldn’t they find a more diverse group than these folks? Don’t get me wrong: each and every one of them shared beautiful, compelling stories. They each did a great job! But I’m pretty sure Target employes at least a few LGBT people of color, or LGBT people of different races or heritages, LGBT people with special needs too, don’t you think?
