Texas: State Troopers Confiscate Tampons And Maxi-Pads At State House Abortion Debate

Rick Perry‘s Texas Republican state government continues to embarrass itself, demean and wage war on its women citizens. As if calling into a special session the Texas state legislature for the sole purpose of closing 37 of the 42 women’s clinics that are qualified to perform abortions, leaving only five in the nation’s second-largest and second-most populous state weren’t bad enough, this afternoon Texas state troopers confiscated maxi-pads and tampons from scores of women who wanted to attend the anti-abortion debate.

Keep in mind that in Texas, it’s legal for people to walk into the state house and legislative chambers with a loaded side arm, but anyone who wanted to attend the hearing was forced to hand over — in full view of the public — a tampon or maxi-pad.

“According to Jessica Luther, a freelance writer and pro-choice activist who has been coordinating much of the push-back to the proposed abortion restrictions over the past few weeks, Senate officials are confiscating any objects they believe may cause a similar disruption in the gallery during Friday’s vote,” Think Progress just reported. “Protesters aren’t allowed to carry water bottles or even feminine hygiene products, just in case they might throw them at lawmakers.”

Meanwhile, as John Aravosis at AmericaBlog reports, one Texas elderly woman was videotaped after troopers took her maxi-pads and diabetic supplies.

“In front of, all of these male troopers took away my maxi-pads, and made a huge deal out of flashing them around and showing… and then saying that I couldn’t go into the gallery, I couldn’t take maxi-pads into the gallery. I’ve never been… I’ve never been so humiliated in my life.”

She adds, “This is too much, this is just like some third world country that we’re in all of a sudden.”

If anyone thinks this is not heinous, I ask you to imagine if your mother were one of these women, humiliated in front of what must feel at the time like the whole world.

They deserve to be hit with tampons and maxi-pads. At least they're going to hit them with something soft instead of … oh I dunno … a bullet or a 'feminine hygiene wash' product.

More evidence to the Talibangelical agenda. Next on the agenda: women must be required to wear headscarves, long sleeved shirts and long dresses. Remove women's right to own property and right to vote.

Absolutely no way I could have stopped myself from pulling a used tampon right out of my hoo-ha and handing it to the next trooper I saw. With my compliments, jackhole…

But of course! These commonly used tools for dealing with menstruation, unknown to the ancients (including the authors of the O.T., circa 5,000 B.C.E.) symbolize the "original sin" of women, the mark of inferiority and filthiness that has permitted bigots and misogynists for millennia to claim that women are "unclean." The Buy Bull is replete with references to this biological phenomenon, so ironically evidencing imperfection in the female sex and therefore flying in the faces of those who believe in creationism/intelligent design instead of the scientifically proven theory of evolution. I ask them, if God is good and omnipotent, why did he make ANY human subject to this humiliating monthly experience? Is He only good to males? Actually, these bigots cannot even answer the latter question in the positive: women do not get enlarged prostates. Nature, not God, equalizes our miseries.

Will they force protesters / citizens to remove their shoes next, or all their clothing to make sure they have nothing to throw at lawmakers?

Perhaps if the lawmakers tried representing and serving the people as they were elected to do instead of trying to control and subjugate women and others to their religious and / or political ideology, protesters / citizens wouldn't want to throw things at them.

Is it a coincidence that the trooper had to act like a prick about it as well or do these lawmakers who act like pricks seek out troopers who act the same way for this assignment?

Also why did they feel the need to confiscate her diabetic supplies as well? Did they really think she would throw them? Will they confiscate hearing aids, or dentures, or prosthetic limbs next?

I would've taken out my tampon and throw it at the trooper's face
