Superbowl 44 was rife with controversy — for the ads. Right-wing hate group “Focus On The Family,” produced a short spot starring outspokenly religious Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and his mother. The ad was planned in cooperation with CBS. The point to remember about the airing of this ad is that it was an advocacy ad — a commercial created to promote a point of view rather than a product or company — which CBS has previously refused to air during the Superbowl, and it was paid for by a recognized hate group.
Additionally, CBS refused to air two other advocacy ads, one, starring popular actress Hillary Duff, for the “That’s So Gay” anti-gay hate speech campaign, and one from gay dating site “Mancrunch.”
CBS reportedly claimed it couldn’t verify sponsors of the “Mancruch” ad could afford to pay for it. GLSEN, co-sponsor of the “That’s So Gay” ad, has been the target of extreme right-wing hate groups and pundits for its ties to its founder, Kevin Jennings, who is now Assistant Deputy in charge of the U.S. Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools at the Department of Education.
Here, in case you haven’t seen them, are all three ads.
