In discussing a judge’s recent decision that a Colorado bakery discriminated against a same-sex couple, Pastor and Colorado House Republican candidate Gordon Klingenschmitt decided that gay people and the judge — not the bakery — are at fault. And he used Martin Luther King, Jr., to claim that it’s OK to discriminate against gay people because of their “character.”
Klingenschmitt, who for some unknown reason goes by the nickname “Dr. Chaps,” said, “I admit that the two men … are humans — they’re men!” That was his defense against the judge’s position that discrimination is dehumanizing.
But, Klingenschmitt continued on his “Pray In Jesus Name” Internet show today, when gay people “manifest sexual immorality, there’s something inside of them that is manifesting.”
“On this show, we like to discern the spirits and I would say that’s a demonic spirit that is manifesting inside of them and sinning by an act of their consent, of their free will, they’re cooperating with the Devil and there is something unhuman in side of them … There is something nonhuman inside of them and that should be discerned as something not human.”
So, gay people are gay because the devil made them do it — but “by an act of their consent”?
“Dr. Chaps” also tried to co-opt Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words to give him the right to discriminate against LGBT people “on the basis of their character.”
Klingenschmitt, by the way, is now trying to get the judge impeached — a typical right wing move that was successful in Iowa, after that state’s Supreme Court unanimously decided their constitution could not ban same-sex couples from marrying.
