Is Hiram Monserrate, the expelled and now-former New York State Senator who was convicted of domestic abuse, using anti-gay rhetoric to beat Jose Peralta, his opponent in the upcoming special election? His supporters certainly are. New York Daily News writer Elizabeth Benjamin just reported the above flyer was distributed in churches in Monserrate’s former district Sunday, stating,
“Jose Peralta is a leading spokesperson for the gay community’s in NYC”
“Monserrate was one of eight Democrats to vote “no” on gay marriage when the bill failed in the Senate last December.
“LGBT advocates were furious and accused him of breaking a promise to vote “yes” – most likely knowing full well that he was headed for a difficult election and needed the help of his fellow amigo and staunch gay marriage opponent, Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr., who has helped devise Monserrate’s church-based campaign strategy.
“There is a big push underway from the gay community to prevent Monserrate from returning to his seat and help elected Peralta, who has voted “yes” on marriage while in the Assembly and says he would do so again if elected to the Senate.”
