Jon Stewart examines the sexism and ageism the media subjected Caitlyn Jenner to after her Vanity Fair cover story.
Jon Stewart Tuesday night showed how the media welcomed Caitlyn Jenner.
Sure, the response overall – except for Fox News – has often been terrific and a huge milestone for transgender people. And many if not most in the media were often respectful and supportive.
But, as Stewart showed, pundits and reporters quickly devolved into treating Caitlyn Jenner as the media tends to treat women – in other words, as a sex object.
“You see, Caitlyn, when you were a man, we could talk about your athleticism, your business acumen,” Stewart observed. “But now you’re a woman, and your looks are really the only thing we care about. Which brings us to phase two of your transition: ‘comparative fuckability.'” he quipped.
To those who compared her to Kim Kardashian, Stewart had a few words too.
“Look, we want to give a woman a compliment here. We just need to make sure another woman gets taken down a peg in the process. It’s how we maintain the balance,” he mocked.
“So Caitlyn Jenner, congratulations,” Stewart offered, for better or for worse. “Welcome to being a woman in America.”
