Watch: Cliven Bundy Talks About ‘The Negro’
In our previous article we detailed the racist ramblings of Nevada cattle rancher and Tea Party hero Cliven Bundy. Bundy, his family, and hundreds of supporters are hunkered down on his ranch and, presumably, on the federal lands his cattle are grazing for free.
Like every rancher who uses federal lands to feed their cattle, Bundy is required by law to pay modest grazing fees. This law is old and entirely reasonable, and the fees are moderated by the federal Bureau of Land Management.
Listen to Tea Party hero Cliven Bundy speak to reporters on Saturday in a video just found by Media Matters, about his views on “the Negro.”
What you’ll see is a man who believes that by the very virtue of his family’s land, he does not have to recognize the rule of law, the federal government, nor does he have to pay what others do. Yet, he also believes the African-Americans were more free as slaves — property — than they are today.
The New York Times first reported Bundy’s comments:
“I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,†he said. Mr. Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, “and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids — and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch — they didn’t have nothing to do. They didn’t have nothing for their kids to do. They didn’t have nothing for their young girls to do.
“And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?†he asked. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.â€
Bundy is under the false impression that most African-Americans are unemployed, on welfare, and have no purpose in their lives. He believes they’d be better off today as slaves, perhaps as his slaves, picking cotton, perhaps tending his cattle.
For the record, the average person who receives food stamps gets $135.70 a month. That’s $4.52 a day.
Whites make up 37% of food stamp recipients, Blacks 22%, Hispanics, less than 10%.
Meanwhile, slaves, it must be noted, were property, were often raped, whipped, and murdered. Their families were broken apart on the whims of their masters.
Cliven Bundy knows nothing about freedom or equality. He does seem well-versed, however, in racism. Despite what his family’s Facebook page claims:
