Trump Says He Will Have to Weigh ‘Big Decisions’ on Cost of Rebuilding Puerto Rico
Promised Texas and Florida He Would Help Them ‘RESTORE, RECOVER, & REBUILD!’
There’s no question that Texas an Florida were devastated by hurricanes, but Puerto Rico was destroyed. And yet, President Donald Trump’s response to the destruction in Texas and Florida was more immediate, supportive, and greater overall, while his response to the absolutely and near-total destruction of Puerto Rico almost always focuses on the financial costs.
Friday morning Trump tweeted that “Big decisions will have to be made as to the cost” of rebuilding Puerto Rico. He never once said that about Texas, Florida, or thew surrounding states that suffered hurricane damage.
To get a better idea of how Trump is thinking about the U.S. mainland versus Puerto Rico, take a look at these tweets Trump has posted:
Texas:
Texas & Louisiana: We are w/ you today, we are w/ you tomorrow, & we will be w/ you EVERY SINGLE DAY AFTER, to restore, recover, & REBUILD! pic.twitter.com/YQb82K2VSB
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 30, 2017
Florida:
FLORIDA-
Just like TX, WE are w/you today, we are w/you tomorrow, & we will be w/you EVERY SINGLE DAY AFTER, to RESTORE, RECOVER, & REBUILD! pic.twitter.com/phRMudujxJ— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 15, 2017
Puerto Rico:
Texas & Florida are doing great but Puerto Rico, which was already suffering from broken infrastructure & massive debt, is in deep trouble..
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 26, 2017
…It’s old electrical grid, which was in terrible shape, was devastated. Much of the Island was destroyed, with billions of dollars….
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 26, 2017
…owed to Wall Street and the banks which, sadly, must be dealt with. Food, water and medical are top priorities – and doing well. #FEMA
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 26, 2017
And even today:
…The fact is that Puerto Rico has been destroyed by two hurricanes. Big decisions will have to be made as to the cost of its rebuilding!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 29, 2017
And as usual, Trump is trying to spin the tremendous lack of leadership from the White House, and focused on how he is being treated in the press:
FEMA & First Responders are doing a GREAT job in Puerto Rico. Massive food & water delivered. Docks & electric grid dead. Locals trying….
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 28, 2017
…really hard to help but many have lost their homes. Military is now on site and I will be there Tuesday. Wish press would treat fairly!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 28, 2017
And to be fair, there were tweets such as this, but they are few and focused, again, on his image, and only after tremendous criticism:
America’s hearts & prayers are with the people of #PuertoRico & the #USVI. We will get through this – and we will get through this TOGETHER! pic.twitter.com/NcmsF4Fqpr
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 26, 2017
So, to sum up, in states where Trump won, which have people who can vote in the presidential election, he promises “we will be w/you EVERY SINGLE DAY AFTER, to RESTORE, RECOVER, & REBUILD!”
In Puerto Rico, which is a U.S. territory with nearly 3.5 million U.S. citizens, who cannot vote for president, he is focused on the cost of rebuilding.
Some responses via Twitter:
Trump is hinting that the cost of rebuilding homes in Puerto Rico might be too great, while simultaneously pushing a tax cut for the rich. https://t.co/G4t5Zl9BZB

Trump says “big decisions will have to be made as to the cost of rebuilding Puerto Rico? Does this mean we aren’t going to rebuild??

Trump & elites waste millions with private jets as he mentions the cost of saving lives in Puerto Rico. https://t.co/HDFvL2OIOo

Meanwhile, Trump is tweeting about the cost of rebuilding Puerto Rico while cutting his own taxes to gut the poor. Nice. https://t.co/S3FeZkN05c

Trump is worried abt the cost of rebuilding Puerto Rico but not abt wasting billions on a border wall here? #ShameOnTrump

Breaking news: Trump’s awake and thinking of not helping Puerto Rico rebuild b/c of cost.
What’s wrong with this lunatic? He’s heartless. https://t.co/RY0lHkbcao— LinP (@BellaSmrtThnkr) September 29, 2017
